As part of its damage control exercise the State unit of the Congress leadership plans to seek Delhi's intervention in settling the land row failing which the party would be mauled during the next election. It is in this connection that several senior Congress leaders, including former legislators and ministers, will meet the External Affairs Minister, Pranabh Mukherjee, and other central leaders, for explaining afresh the impact of the land row over the state Congress unit, especially in the Jammu region. Congress leaders, today said that the "party leaders and workers had been placed in a predicament following a campaign launched by the BJP and those connected with the saffron brigade against the Congress’’.
They said that "our political rivals have started convincing people that the land order was revoked by the Congress led Government which had added to our problems". They said that "we have decided to take a group of party leaders to Delhi tomorrow to seek Delhi's intervention in the land row so that an early solution was found which was to the satisfaction of the people of the Jammu region."
In reply to question Raman Bhalla, former minister who was the first Congress leader to court arrest yesterday, said "several Congress leaders, including MPs belonging to the Jammu region and former ministers and legislators had extended their support to the agitation as they apprehended attacks on their houses”. He said "when we reach Delhi we will apprize the Congress High Command about our problems which had made it difficult for us to keep our vote bank intact” and confessed that "number of Congress supporters have started taking part in the protest rallies organized by the Sangarsh Samiti and this trend could be checked only when Delhi resolved the land row. He said that "if Delhi continued to dither "our political foes will be able to draw mileage during the next Assembly election."
