Following the effective measures taken by the State Government to ensure smooth and hassle free movement of load carriers on the Srinagar-Jammu-Lakhanpur stretch of National Highway, the arrival of essential suppliesand dispatch of fruit from the valley has registered significant improvement. As many as 2003 trucks and tankers crossed the tunnel in last 24 hours alone. A spokesman of the Divisional Administration said here today that during the past four days, as many as 5542 trucks and tankers have crossed the Jawahar Tunnel from both sides. These include 2839 trucks carrying essential supplies reached the Valley while 2703 trucks carrying fruit, vegetables and merchandise, besides empty trucks left the Lower Munda check post during this period. As regards dispatching Kashmir's fruit trucks outside the valley, 1506 fruit and 198 vegetables laden trucks have crossed the Tunnel for different destinations in the country in last four days. However, during the last 24 hours ending 2pm today, 437 fruit and 96 vegetables trucks left the valley for onward journey to fruit markets in the country while 970 load carriers bringing essential supplies, fuel and other items reached the valley. He said 107 trucks carried other items while 393 tankers, after offloading fuel hare, also returned during this period. The spokesman said that of the 970 load carriers that arrived in Srinagar during the past 24 hours, 278 carried rice, 92 sheep, 36 chicken and 65 fresh fruit. He said 66 diesel, 64 petrol, 20 kerosene oil and 38 LPG tankers also arrived here during the past 24 hours. He said 279 trucks arrived with other merchandise while 32 empty trucks also returned. The spokesman said that with these arrivals, the total number of 698 rice, 115 atta, 155 sheep and 124 chicken laden trucks have arrived in the Valley during the last 4 days besides 252 diesel, 194 petrol, 120 LPG and 91 kerosene oil tankers which has helped in creating sufficient stocks to meet the requirement of the people of the Valley. Meanwhile, a spokesman of the Health Department here said that between August 10th and 17th, 2008, as many as, 12 trucks carrying medicines have been received here by private concerns. He said supplies are also being received by air while some more trucks are in the transit. The spokesman said that the Principal Government Medical College, Srinagar and Director, Health Services, Kashmir have received 5 trucks of medicines, syringes and bandages. He said 60 packets of medicines/drugs containing X-ray films, developer and fixer surgical glows etc have also been received. |
