Flood loss estimated at 189 crore

Srinagar, September 8,
The Kashmir Valley suffered losses of Rs 188.811 crore in the recent floods with paddy spread over 92,724.75 hectares and other crops in 34,250 hectares of land destroyed, according to preliminary estimates.

In addition, 382 houses were been heavily damaged and 6,103 partially damaged in the six districts of Jammu and Kashmir as per tentative information collected from across the Valley, officials said on Friday.

They said 425 villages were affected by incessant rains and floods of which 68 were in Pulwama, 50 in Badgam, 68 in Srinagar and 221 in Anantnag districts.

As many as 8,415 stranded people were evacuated and 263 rescued from flooded areas, they said.

Four persons lost their lives in the worst-hit Anantnag district while 13 people were killed in Jammu division where 155 houses, including shops, were damaged and 54 cattle perished in the flood fury, they said.

Of the 13 deaths in Jammu region, six were reported in Kathua district, five in Udhampur and two in Poonch district, the officials said quoting the preliminary reports.

Other infrastructure damaged in Kashmir division included a bridge, five culverts. The damage to roads, bridges and the power infrastructure had been assessed at around Rs 7.69 lakh.

They said the process of assessment in far-flung areas was going on speedily and final report would follow soon.
