| Cong says LS elections will be in time | | | New Delhi | Aug 21
The Congress has claimed that it would retain power after the Lok Sabha polls which will be fought "under the leadership of Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister" and said the elections will be held on schedule. "Congress will contest the elections under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi as party chief and Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister," party General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi told reporters in New Delhi on Thursday. Dwivedi's remarks came when asked about who would be the UPA's candidate for the Prime Ministership in the next elections. His statement came a couple of days after the AICC had suggested that the issue of the PM candidate of the UPA was still open, casting doubts over Gandhi's virtual declaration on Independence Day that Singh is the party's choice. Replying to questions, the Congress leader insisted that the party would get "not less than 200 seats" in the polls which it would contest in the alliance mode with UPA partners. He said the elections will be held on schedule when asked whether the party plans to advance the polls. Asked whether Singh himself would contest the elections, Dwivedi noted that the Prime Minister is already a member of the Upper House. "Such decisions are taken by the party and the person concerned," he added. |
