Don't panic:centre watching situation
8/21/2008 11:54:06 PM

Jammu | Aug 21

Countrymen do not feel scared over the turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir. The centre continues to keep a vigil on the situation in the state. So you need not worry.Right from the Prime Minister to the External Affairs Minister and the Union Home Minister eveybody in the centre keep a vigil on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. They will not allow the situation to go out of their hands when it has already assumed an alarming dimension with even kids and babies courting arrest in Jammu. The centre keeps a watch on the protest rallies. It keeps a watch on those raising Bhum Bhum Slogans. It does not keep a watch on those who raise pro-Pakistan slogans or those who sing in favour of Azadi or those who try to divide people of the state on communal and regional lines. The centre has kept all these elements on its watch list. What else you can expect from the centre ?
There is no magic wand in the hands of the Prime Minister. He has done his job.He is doing his job by first sending members of an All Party delegation and later the Unon Home secretary to the troubled state.Yesterday he sent the National security Adviser,M.K.Narayanan,and other senior functionaries of the central Government to the state not for holding parleys with political groups connected with the agitation but with the Governor, his advisers and a dozen of senior civil and police officers. The central team suggested to the state authorities to strengthen the administrative machinery right from the capital to the tehsil level. Yes Narayanan found time, after discussions with Government functionaries, for meeting some political leaders. He too supported a sustained dialogue for settling the land row.
He is not the only person to say so.Such advice is being dished out by central and state leaders.Dr Farooq Abdullah has been optimistic on restoration of peace and normalcy if dialogue between the two sides is encouraged. But so far none has spelt out a solution or a couple of them.Everybody keeps on saying settle the dispute.Others say resolve the land row through dialogue but none is ready to say anything what could be the possible solution.Farooq Abdullah is known for blowing hot and cold in the same breath. He did it again when yesterday he said solution is possible but he added what people in the valley want is not acceptable to the Jammuites and the vice versa. If such is the case where can one find a solution. The Sangarsh Samiti wants land to be restored to the Board, separatists oppose it.And Sajjad Lone, who heads Peoples' Conference is quite vocal when he dares those seeking land to be restored to the Board to come to Kashmir and see if they can have the land.
It is a tricky situation which calls for patience. It calls upon political leaders and separatists to avoid trying to provoke Jammuites who are already peeved and enraged over the land loss which they feel has hurt their religious sentiments and lent further evidence to the stepmotherly treatment they have been receiving since the last 60 years.
