Thousands court arrest in country for return of land to SASB
The Union Cabinet of United Progressive Alliance government today had an emergency meeting in New Delhi to discuss the latest situation assuming in Jammu and Kashmir. Reports said that a situation briefing was obtained from the National Security Advisor MK Narayanan who was in Srinagar the previous day to hold talks with political leaders and the Governor’s administration. Reports coming from New Delhi indicated that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may finally intervene and talk directly to the protesting groups in Jammu and Kashmir to restore peace in both the regions. Singh has been meeting a number of political leaders from both places in the past two days. Some of these leaders strongly suggested he take a personal initiative in the matter. Meanwhile, on the call of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti, thousands of people different parts of country courted arrests. Reports of Jail Bharo Andolan in large numbers have been received from Rajasthan and Jharkhand. Reports said that the National Security Advisor (NSA) M K Narayanan today briefed the Union cabinet on the latest situation in Jammu and Kashmir after his visit to the state in the wake of the controversy over transfer of forest land to the Amarnath Shrine Board. "Narayanan apprised the Cabinet of the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir," Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi told reporters after the meeting. Asked about steps taken by the Centre to defuse the crisis, he said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already taken the initiative by convening an all-party meeting to address the problem. During his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Narayanan had a meeting with Governor N N Vohra and it was decided to facilitate discussions with all groups protesting over the Amarnath land issue. The NSA reviewed law and order, security, public distribution system and measures related to strengthening the administrative machinery. Narayanan was accompanied by Defence Secretary Vijay Singh, Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee H Upadayay, Director of Intelligence Bureau P C Haldar and Joint Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office Sanjay Mitra. Meanwhile, reports from Jharkhand said that over two hundred BJP and Sangh Parivar activists today staged a demonstration near Raj Bhavan and courted arrest here demanding transfer of land to the Amarnath shrine. Joining the nationwide 'jail bharo' programme by the Sangh Parivar, sitting and former BJP MLAs and sangh activists gathered near the Raj Bhavan and shouted slogans, demanding transfer or return of Amarnath land to the Amarnath Shrine Board, restoration of the Amarnath Yatra to the Board and recall of Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra --- should be fulfilled at the earliest. Another report said that thousands of BJP, VHP and RSS cadres today defied prohibitory orders to court arrest in Jaipur demanding restoration of forest land to the Amarnath shrine board in Jammu and Kashmir. Over 3000 activists led by BJP MP G L Bhargawa, VHP's Narapat Singh and Acharya Dharmendra took part in the court arrest campaign outside the collectorate where prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Cr.PC were in force, ASP (South) Rajesh Singh said. The protesters are being released on the spot after completing the bail bond formalities under section 151, he said. The Rajasthan unit of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti spearheading the agitation in Jammu and Kashmir over the land controversy claimed that over one lakh activists took part in the 'Jail Bharo' agitation after holding demonstrations and rallies at all the 33 district headquarters across the state. |
