Jammu on boil, police stations attacked, vehicles torched

Former Health Minister Mangat Ram Sharma came under attack of a violent mob in Bhagwati Nagar area. He had to flee his vehicle to escape the mob wrath. The vehicle was later damaged by agitators

Though a 15-hour relaxation in curfew passed off relatively peacefully in the Winter Capital City and its outskirts but there were a couple of ugly incidents which found the Police at receiving end of the agitators.
Former health minister Mangat Ram Sharma became the subject of anger by the protestors here at Bagwati Nagar when he along with his family members had gone to meet doctor Sushil Rajdhan for the treatment of his grand son. Protestors getting a clue about Mangat’s movement were waiting outside in the street. The moment Mangat came out, the protestors surrounded his vehicle. Sensing trouble, cops in one of the escort vehicles with the senior Congress leaders ran away with the gypsy.
Mangat too sensing trouble escaped from his vehicle and entered into nearby residence of SSP Raghuvir Singh in the locality leaving his family in the vehicle. Protestors asked them to get down from the vehicle and then subjected the vehicles (Scorpio) stones and rods. Soon police from concerned police station reached the spot and saved the vehicle. The family members of Mangat then taken to their house safely. Later Mangat who was in the house of SSP was taken to his house by a police officer on his motorbike.
Reports from different parts of Jammu region maintained that barring few incidents of violence torching, situation remained peaceful and normal throughout the day and no untoward incident was reported. Sources informed that thousands of protestors came on roads and took out mock funeral processions. Shouting slogans against Governor N N Vohra and Congress led UPA government, the protestors including women and children burnt the effigies of UPA government and demanded restoration of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
Protesters attacked the senior Congress leader when he was on way to a private Hospital for medical check-up. However, acting swiftly his security guards rescued him safely from the spot and was taken to his residence. He was accompanied by his family members who were also rescued by the police.
"Congress leader is safe, as security guards managed to rescue him along with other members of family" a police said, adding that he was taken to home safely. Sources informed that the Congress leader was not traveling in the vehicle which was damaged. "He was in another Car and had a narrow escape" they said.
Sources informed that the mob smashed the window panes of Congress leader vehicle's (Scorpio JK02W-0001) while he was shifted to a senior police officer at Bhagwati Nagar from where he was shifted to his residence on a scooter by police personnel.
Later, the protesters also set ablaze five abandoned (seized) vehicles in Bhagwati area "Five vehicles including one Sumo, 2 Maruti, 1 Gypsy were first attacked with rods and 'lathis' and then set on fire" eyewitness said. Besides this, three more vehicles were completely damaged by the agitated mob here.
"Congress leader is safe, as security guards managed to rescue him along with other members of family" a police officer said adding he was taken to home.
Sources said that the congress leader was not traveling in the vehicle which was damaged. "He was in another Car and had a narrow escape" they said adding the former minister was rushed to safety on a motor bike by a police officer.
"Five vehicles including one Sumo, 2 Maruti, 1 Gypsy were first attacked with rods and then set on fire" eye witness said. "Five seized vehicles were first damaged and then set on fire", official sources said adding RAF and CRPF personnel have been deployed in the area. The protesters also tried to attack the official residence of the Congress leader but police and RAF jawans foiled their attempt and disperse them.
Reports from Janipura area said that protesters attacked a Tata mobile vehicle carrying essential commodities of a shopkeeper and looted it. The vehicle was carrying rice and wheat flour (Atta) to Bantalab.
However, police claimed that the vehicle was carrying government Ration for the public distribution and was stopped at Janipura Main Chowk. "The supply was meant for public distribution but the vehicle was stopped and looted by protesters on its way," sources informed.
Meanwhile, the administration announced day-long curfew relaxation in Jammu city and its outskirts. "The curfew was relaxed in Jammu district for a day from 5:00 A.M to 8:00 P. M," the sources told, adding that it would be extended till 10:00 P.M if situation remains normal. Day curfew was also lifted in Udhampur and Samba districts, official sources informed.
Reports from New Plot and Janipora maintained that the police arrested over dozen protestors for restoring to violence and damaging public property.
Reports maintained that the protesters including children and women took to streets and shouted slogans against Governor N N Vohra and UPA government. Carrying national as well as black flags, they burnt the effigies of UPA government for alleged "criminal silence" being maintained by the government in resolving Amarnath land transfer issue. They demanded that the land should be restored to Shrine Board and autonomous status of the Board should be maintained.
Reports from different tehsil and district headquarters said that the thousands of people including people carrying national flags took to streets and shouted slogans against the Governor N N Vohra and UPA government.
