| Police to get tough with agitators | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 22
The state Government has decided to deal firmly with those who continue to indulge in violence by torching private and Government vehicles in Jammu. As part of the new strategy Manohar Singh has been posted as SSP Jammu and he has been asked to take all possible measures for preventing slogan shouting groups of youth from damaging private and Government vehicles and from indulging in arson and loot. Senior police functionaries today said that the Department is all parie for SSP S.D.S Jamwal but "we wanted to appoint an officer who could foil the designs of unruly elements that have sneaked into the Samiti movement."They said that Jamwal had tackled the situation tactfully and the way he defused the crisis in Jammu medical college where the entire staff had gone on strike following thrashing of a doctor by the police. In reply to a question the top police functionaries said during any crisis officers are reshuffled so that a suitable officer could tackle the unruly element. They said even in wars generals are reshuffled. They made it clear that the police have been instructed to show a humane face towards those engaged in peaceful demonstrations. They have been asked to initiate tough measures wherever some groups of youth resort to violence and arson. They said by and large Jammu has experienced peaceful protest rallies but some unruly elements try to vitiate the atmosphere which now will not be tolerated. |
