With a raging internal disturbance in the interiors of Jammu and Kashmir, militants are on continuous prowl on the Line of Control and hinterland of the state making it tough for the forces to handle the situation at both fronts.
A day after shelling incident in Nowhera sector of Jammu region, militants made their way into this side of Line of Control leading to an encounter with the security forces in North Kashmir. In another incident, two personnel of the Territorial Army were shot at and left critically injured by militants in Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir.
Reports said that a senior army officer killed and four others, including the commander of a Rastriya Rifles battalion, were injured in a fierce encounter with suspected foreign militants in Macchal sector of northern Kashmir today in which two terrorists were shot dead.
Col J J Joseph and another officer were injured, while leading a daredevil operation against a group of foreign militants in the dense forests of Macchal sector in Kupwara district, amidst reports of escalation in militant related incidents in the state.
Joseph, in spite of the injury, directed his troops, but was later evacuated to Base Hospital in Srinagar. His troops launched the operation following specific inputs about a large group of terrorists hiding in the forest.
"The encounter is still going on and the pattern of fire indicates that these could be foreign militants," Army sources said.
The Rastriya Rifles laid a cordon of the jungle area and commenced operations early this morning. This is the first major encounter with terrorists in the hinterland, and comes as reports suggest a steepincrease in infiltration attempts by militants and LOC violations by the Pakistani troops.
According to army figures, July and August have witnessed a steep increase in ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops with incidents jumping to 10 violations a month from one or two in April and May.
In another incident, two army personnel were critically injured when they were shot at by militants in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir today, official sources said.
Riyaz Ahmad Sheikh and Bashir Ahmad, both personnel of Territorial Army, were not in uniform when they were shot at by unidentified militants at Najiwan in Kangan area this morning. They were admitted to hospital here where condition of one of them was stated to be critical.
No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the incident so far. A hunt has been launched to nab the militants, they said
