| Pakistan not opposed to opening Jehlum valley road for trade | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 23
Pakistan Government has, accepted,in principle,India's proposl on throwing open Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road for trade.Official sources today said that Islamabad has delayed its clearance to the proposal because it wants first to establish infrastructure that was needed in its area across the Uri sector for the movement of trucks and for the drivers. Acorss the border the authorities have to establish board and lodge facilities for the truck drivers and parking space for the trucks carrying goods. Sources said that towards the middle of October the road would be open for trade in case Pakistan was not plagued by internal political problems. The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road was thrown open for traffic on April 7,2005 and since then there has been demand for opening the route for trade link.Even people and those connected with trade and industries in Jammu have been supporting opening of Poonch-Rawalakot route for trade. They also want the Suchetgarh-Sialkot road to be opened for traffic and trade. In reply to a question official sources said that after the Kaman setu(bridge) had been pgrded there would be no problem for good trucks to cross the birdge on their way to Muzaffarabad. However, besides the separatists traders too want the list of import and export items, that could be traded on the route,to be made comprehensive. They do not want restrictions to be imposed on import and export of goods because they have been told that India had listed 57 items for import and export. |
