PDP expresses concern over mounting attacks on minority community
Mehbooba demands stern action against outside criminals

New Delhi | Aug 23

Expressing deep concern over the mounting attacks on the members of minority community and forced migration from their homes in various suburbs of Jammu, the PDP has called for stern action against the subversive elements, which have let loose a reign of terror in the region.
"Hundreds of Gujjar families have reportedly been forced to flee their homes in various parts of Jammu following attacks by armed hooligans and even the persons in whose premises the hapless Gujjars have taken refuge in Jammu are now being targeted by the police," the party President Mehbooba Mufti said in a statement today.
Mehbooba said, ironically, the State has failed to provide security even to the non-Muslims, who differ with the views of the agitators in Jammu, how Muslims there, already demonized and threatened, can feel confident. "Cosmetic reasons, dished out by the administration, should not prevail upon lives of defenseless people," she said and added that much needs to be done by the people of Jammu and the administration to instill confidence among the hapless minorities of the region.
Demanding stern action against the criminals from outside the State, who reportedly, have taken charge of the Jammu agitation and are indulging in brazen acts of violence including arson, looting and targeted attacks on minorities, Mehbooba said the ‘failure of the law enforcing agencies to curb organized criminal activities in the region have put a question mark on their impartiality’. "Where was the administration when Bajrang Dal and VHP were openly holding weapon training camps in Jammu and spitting venom against minorities"?, she asked.
Strongly condemning the recurrent violent attacks in Jammu on the poor Kashmir truckers, the PDP President said despite official claims about normal vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Delhi highway, the hooligans in Jammu are hell bent upon enforcing an economic blockade against the Kashmir valley by discouraging movement of trucks on the road by attacking the drivers and their vehicles.
She said PDP cadres and their properties, in particular, have come under targeted attacks of the hooligans in Jammu and police has failed to secure them. "Our cadres are being threatened regularly in Jammu and despite repeated cautions; police has failed to take any action against the criminals indulging in such deplorable acts," she said.
Expressing dismay over the alleged partisan role of the law enforcing agencies in Poonch, Rajouri and Doda, Mufti said the reports that the police is targeting the members of the majority community in these areas should be looked into to prevent eruption of any ugly situation in those areas adding that she would take up the issue of worsening law and order situation and targeting of minorities in Jammu with the authorities in the Central Government.
