| Congress leaders mount pressure on PM to recall Vohra; reconstitute Board | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 23
Several senior Congress leaders from the Jammu region, including MPs and former legislators and ministers are mounting pressure on the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister, Pranabh Mukherjee, on the need for reconstituting the Amarnath Shrine Board for facilitating restoration of land to it. They also demanded recall of Governor, N.N. Vohra. Raman Bhalla, who was also a member of the Congress delegation said that "we conveyed to the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister that the Congress would be wiped out of its stronghold in Jammu if the demands of the people of the region were not accepted immediately.' While assuring the Prime Minister their support for the Congress, the delegation members pledged that they would continue to be the disciplined workers of the party. They made it clear that in case the demands of the people were not conceded it would be difficult for the Congress leaders to function in Jammu, the former MLA said. Bhalla said, on phone, that "we also demanded immediate recall of Vohra, who is seen in Jammu as the main person responsible for the current trouble and turmoil”. They informed the Prime Minister that the people demanded recall of Vohra and once it was done the level of anger in Jammu could be diluted. Those who met the Prime Minister and other leaders included Madan Lal Sharma, Lal Singh Manohar Lal Sharma, R.S.Chib andGharu Ram. They made a strong plea for restoration of land to the reconstituted Board. They explained that once the state subjects were taken as members of the Board there should be no problem in diverting 800 kanals of land for a period of two to three months to the Board for raising infrastructure for the pilgrims on a temporary basis. The Congress leader have decided to extend their stay in Delhi so that they could meet other senior functionaries of the Government and the AICC for persuading them to resolve the land issue immediately, the report reaching here said. |
