| In tough times, Police still disciplines in Kashmir | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 24
Official sources today denied reports that several thousand police personnel in Kashmir have refused to join duty. They said police continued to run all police stations and a number of the police columns had been deployed to assist the paramilitary forces in enforcing curfew restrictions strictly. The sources also denied rumours that there was any revolt in the police. A senior police officer, however, stated that the police personnel had objected to the way they were being directed to tackle protest marchers in Srinagar. He said that some of the police officials had refused to carry out some instructions on the ground that since they lacked the numerical strength and were not fully equipped it was not possible for them to initiate action against those carrying Pakistani flags or shouting pro-Azadi and pro-Pakistani slogans. He said others had been peeved over the what the police force in Kashmir were being asked to use force when their counterparts in the Jammu region had been asked to exercise restraint. However, official sources said that there were some misconceptions because in Jammu two SSPs had been shifted only when they had shown laxity in coming down heavily on the protesters. For days together Jammu was allowed to reel under curfew restrictions and in several other towns the Army was called out to assist the police in maintaining law and order. They said during the last 18 years the police force had shown tremendous courage in tackling militancy related activities and over the years it has emerged as a strong and disciplined force. As a result of it the police have never refused to shoulder the responsibility of handling law and order even in difficult circumstances. |
