| WILL PDP STAKE CLAIM FOR ONE VACANT CABINET SEAT? | | | Jammu, September 8, :- After patch up with party patron, Mufti Mohd Sayeed, Will Mr Muzaffar Hussain Baig, former Deputy Chief Minister who resigned from the cabinet after being recalled from the council of ministers by the PDP leadership, find a place in the ministry again ? This question has assumed significance following reapproachment between the Muftis’ and Mr Baig. Mr Baig has decided to stay put in the PDP which the party leadership has accepted. He, however, does not seem to be keen in getting reinducted in the cabinet despite the fact that the electorates in his Baramullah constituency have staged black flag demonstration against his ouster from the cabinet. The constituency witnessed general strike in support of their demand for reinduction of their representative in the cabinet. Their demand may not find any immediate response from the PDP leadership after suspension of Mr Ghulam Hassan Mir,a former Minister, had been revoked.Mr Mir is a strong contender for a ministerial berth. In fact he had fallen out with the Muftis’when the party leadership recommended the name of Mr Baig for the post of Deputy Chief Minister at the time of change of guard in November 2005. Mir had contended that since he was the founder member of the PDP and much senior to Mr Baig in political career he had felt hurt when his name was not recommended for the post of Deputy Chief Minister. When contacted Mr Hassan Mir said, that “suspension order had been revoked. Well I had never thought of quitting or splitting the party. My aim is to strengthen the PDP and not weaken it.” Asked whether he expected to find a place in the cabinet he said “I do not nourish any such feeling. I am a party workers and it is for the PDP leadership to determine whether my induction in the cabinet is necessary or not.” PDP sources said that after the resignation of Mr Baig one seat in the cabinet has fallen vacant and it was for the PDP leadership to get this seat filled or allow it to remain vacant. Judged from the recent turmoil within the PDP and political uncertainty that had gripped the ruling coalition it is not easy for the PDP leadership to make a choice between Mr Baig and Mr Mir. Indications are that for the time being the Muftis will keep their cards close to the chest because they feel that both Mir and Baig had maligned the party leadership’s image at one time or the other. The Muftis, according to PDP sources, are not prepared to create a chance in which the opposition National Conference could utilize either Mir or Baig for embarrassing the PDP leadership. Hence the Muftis will try to keep both the Mir and Baig in good humour which could help the party in its reconsolidation measures which have begun with the membership drive that has been launched in the state. It is this context that Mufti Mohd. Sayeed arrived in Jammu on Friday to interact with party leaders and workers. He would explore the possibility of widening the party network in other areas of the Jammu region after his success in establishing party cadre in Vijaypur and R.S.Pora areas. Already the Muftis’ have begun making inroads in the National Conference stronghold in Poonch and Rajouri belts. |
