| Politicians talk for talks | | | Nirbhay Jammual Jammu | Aug 25
Politicians of various hues have been plagued by confusion. This element of confusion among the political leaders has resulted in growing contradictions within the political parties. Except for issuing appeals for maintaining peace and for emphasising the need for resolving the land row through talks and dialogues political leaders have no cut and dried solution to the problem.Mark the contradiction in the state unit of the Congress. Those who had gone to Delhi for meeting the Prime Miniter and other central leaders had demanded recall of the Governor,N.N.Vohra.But a senior Congress leader,Mangat Ram Sharma, and his temporising political colleague G.S.Charak have claimed that the recall of the Governor is not the demand of the Congress. Confusion seems to have forced Ms Mehboob Mufti to lose her cool. She is defiant. She loves to dish out threats. The latest being that she and her party would join peoples' movement if the Government did not stop repressive measures against peaceful demonstrators in Kashmir who were simply demanding resolution of the Kashmir issue.Perhaps she wants to give an impresion that she and her party are not yet part of the movement when she and her party have been responsible for the ongoing turmoil in the state. She and her party leaders and workers have been lending support to the movement which had been started against land diversion, later shifted to opening of the Jehlum valley road for trade and now for the settlement of the Kashmir issue.Like the separatists the PDP chief too has an eye for the resolution of Kashmir and that is why Ghulam Nabi Azad is a sinner and Parvez Musharraf is a saint in her eyes. While the congress unit in Kashmir has preferred to play a safe role by watching the situation from the galleries the Jammu unit is a divided house with a large number of party leaders annoucing their support to the agitation over the restoration of land to the Shrine Board. The case is similar to the National Conference. Its Jammu provincial unit is for sustained dialogue between the Government and the Sangarsh Samiti, the Kashmir unit has indirectly cast its lot with the separatists.Omar Abdullah, who has of late shown signs of maturity, has favoured dialogue between the Government and the separatists. He is not totally wrong. If the Government succeeds in making separatists agree on earmarking 800 kanals of land to the Board for setting up temporary tents for two months the Governor can easily resolve the land row.Though he and his father,Dr Farooq Abdullah, continue to support the dialogue process they do not conceal their indirect support for the movement in Kashmir because they believe that ultimately the valley is their constituency where they have to measure swords with the PDP. These political leaders besides those belonging to the BJP and the Panthers Party seem to have been gripped by fears of uncertainity. What next ? This is the question that keeps on rocking their minds. When shall the turmoil end ?This is another question that bothers them. They are not prepared to watch the situation from the sidelines.Hence they have found a convenient tool in remaining engaged in issuing threats and counter threats. This exercise has allowed them a chance for registering their presence. As the regional divide has touched a new high political leaders too have adopted regional approach. Those belonging to the valley their hearts throb with the slogans the protesters raise and those belonging to the Jammu region cherish the slogans of Bhum Bhum Bholey and Bharat Mata Ki Jai.Let the leaders of the two sides join hands and then they could hold talks with the separatists in Kashmir and the Samiti leaders in Jammu.Once it is done the land row could be resolved. |
