Even as the Central Government today reiterated its appeal to the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti to resume the dialogue, the situation remained tense across the region with protests and demonstrations continuing to dominate the scene everywhere.
Meanwhile, one more person involved in the land row demonstrations died today in the hospital after battling injuries which he had sustained during the Jail Bharo Andolan.
The deceased identified as Bodh Raj resident of Dablad was injured few days back while going for court arrest. He was rushed to GMC hospital where his condition was stated to be critical. Today he breathed his last. Where as in another incident in Muthi area protestors burnt the gypsy of the drug control department parked in the area. In another incident protestors threw petrol bomb to police which missed the target and fell on the ice cream parlor in KC food Junction resulting fire started engulfing it. A rescue team extinguished the fire before it turned into ugly face. Scores of protestors had received injuries in the clashes that occurred in different places in Jammu district.
Earlier today the Centre said dialogue among parties is the only way to resolve the Jammu & Kashmir crisis. Minister of State for Home, S Jaiswal said challenge to India's sovereignty is unacceptable. Solution to the J&K crisis can only come through talks, he said.
Meanwhile, fresh violence broke out on Tuesday in Purani Mandi area of Jammu. According to reports, pro-shrine board protesters clashed with police in Jammu after the fourth round of peace talks failed.
On Monday night, taking exception to "excesses of police and Rapid Action Force" on protesters during the 'chakka jam', Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS) announced suspension of talks with the four-member governor's panel "till such kind of operation is stopped".
Addressing a hurriedly called press conference SASS convener Leela Karan Sharma also demanded immediate removal of three top senior police officers — IGP Jammu, SSP Jammu and SSP Kathua. He said if Union government is serious to resolve the impasse, it should depute a Central team to assess the loss in Jammu region during the stir.
Condemning the "highhandedness of the police and RAF" on Monday, Sharma said at least 150 vehicles parked on roads were damaged by the police and RAF at Gandhinagar, Nai Basti and Digiana. "They also threw teargas shells in residential areas in which two minors were injured," he said.
Shops and markets remained closed and attendance in government and semi-government offices and banks continue to remained thin on Tuesday due to non-availability of private and public transport which has been off the roads since the agitation began on June 29.
The authorities lifted curfew in Kathua town today, a day after it was imposed following incidents of violence and subsequent clashes between police and protestors.
However, the ban orders remained in force in the border town of Poonch for last four days. Curfew was clamped in Poonch town on August 23 in the wake of communal clashes in which several shops and houses were burnt and some vehicles were damaged.
Night curfew continued to remain enforced in Kishtwar town, which was also rocked by communal violence on August 12.
