| Congress refuses to buy Mangat’s stand | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 27
The state unit of the Congress continues to be a divided house. Those senior Congress leaders who met Sonia Gandhi,Pranabh Mukherjee,Shivraj Patil and A.K.Antony have claimed that during the talks they had raised the demand for the recall of Governor,N.N.Vohra.A former Minister,Raman Bhalla, who was present in these meetings said that "we made a plea for the recall of the Governor because it was the demand of the people." Another congress leader,in reply to a question, said that the recent statement of Mangat Ram Shama and GS.Chrak that the recall of the Governor was not the demand of the Congress was their personal statement. He said "the PCC leadership would have issued a contradiction but it did not want to create more awkward situation for Mangat Ram." Raman Bhalla and others said that "in the given situation we cannot go against the peoples' sentiments." They said that they had urged the central leaders to expedite the land row settlement because the delay in resolving the row had already created many problems in the Jammu region. They said that the central leaders assured them that the land row would be resolved soon. The Congress leaders, who are expected to return to Jammu today, said that since Mangat Ram and Charak were not the members of the PCC they were trying to sow the seeds of dissensions in the organisation. They said that some congress leaders were trying to weaken the organization by going against the sentiments of the people "which we will not allow."They made it clear that by extending support to the ongoing agitation aginst revocation of the land diversion order they were simply pleading the case of the majority of the people in the region. |
