What an irony of fate? For Kashmiri separatists Pakistan continues to be an ideal country where the Army is a separate entity capable of running a parallel Government.The lose and liberal democracy in India are no longer music to the ears of Kashmiri separatists.
They continue to sing songs in praise of Pakistan where the six-month old democratic structure is on the verge of a collapse after the PMLN withdrew its support to the PPP led Government in Islamabad. After the February election the two had joined hands on a common minimum programme which included impeachment of Gen. Parvez Musharraf and reinstatement of sacked judges.Right from day one PMLN chief Nawaz Sharif had been goading the PPP leadership for fulfilling the commitment.Asif Ali Zardari was initially reluctant on the impeachment motion. He has been equally unwilling to reinstate the sacked judges.
After Gen. Parvez Musharraf's exit Nawaz Sharif felt satisfed and he kept on waiting for the reinstatement of sacked judges. However, the PPP leadership threw a bomb by announcing that Zardari would be the party candidate for Presidential election. Nawaz Sharif could no longer tolerate one insult after another. He could not stomach breach of one commitment and the other. He hit back and announced that his PMLN will sit in the opposition. Thus the PPP led Government in Islamabad has been reduced to a minority. The PPP leadership has gone to the extent of telling that it was not always necessary to honour agreements. This was countered by Nawaz Sharif by saying that affairs in the world run on agreements.
He had felt hurt that the PPP leadership had not evolved a consensus on the nomination of a presidential candidate. He has now decided to field a candidate of his choice against Asif Ali Zardari thereby indicating that he has sealed the doors for reconciliation. It is a
diferent matter that the two may part the company for good or reunite. What is important is that just two main political parties could not hold together for even six months. Against this several poltical parties of different hues and ideology have been able to hold together in Delhi for over four and a half years.The Congress led coalition Government in Delhi is still alive despite withdrawal of support to it by the leftists. Here lies the beauty in the Indian democratic structure.
And within less than 24 hours of the Sharif pullout the Pakistani troops have started assuming the role of a major domo. The first task it took in its hand was to help groups of militants in sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir. Its troops opened fire on the Indian pickets in Akhnoor and Poonch for providing fire cover to the infiltrators. It is not known whether the Pakistani Army authorities did it on their own or had instructions from the beleaguered PPP leadership. It is part of the Pak plan to kick up border row with India whenever the Government in Islamabad is in the soup or the country is faced with severe
political and security crisis. Hence India has to be on the alert for facing these needle pricks from Pakistan. Even after a nine-year period of military dictatorship political leaders in Pakistan have not become wise enough. They need not because they have the support from Kashmiri separatists. |
