| Eerie silence prevails in town | | SAYSS rally called off, talks resume today | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 27
An eerie calm prevailed in the Jammu City and its adjoining areas since early this morning as the news of militants’ strike in Chinore area broke out. Unlike the usual course of protests and demonstrations, a shocked town remained glued to the television screens to watch the developments. It was by the afternoon that Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti announced that the proposed rally at Parade Grounds had been called off. This underlined appreciation for gravity of the situation. In rest of the region, curfew continued without any relaxation in border township of Poonch, while it was relaxed from 5AM to 5PM in communally sensitive Kishtwar town. Meanwhile, the Congress on Wednesday said the government was willing to talk to those who believe in more autonomy but not with those who owe their allegiance to foreign countries. "The UPA has said the government was open to dialogue with those who want alternative models of autonomy but there was no question of dealing with the terrorists or those who owe allegiance to a foreign inimical country like Pakistan," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters here. Singhvi claimed that considerable progress has been made in talks with the Jammu-based Sangharsh Samiti. Earlier in the afternoon, expressing grave concern over loss of the lives of innocent people in terrorist attack in Chinore area of Bantalab, Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti squarely blamed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference (NC) president Omar Abdullah for these gruesome killings as these Kashmiri leaders have been encouraging militants for the last two months by launching a vicious campaign against people of Jammu region. Some days back PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti had threatened to teach a lesson to the people of Jammu region for launching a mass movement for the restoration of land to the Shrine Board, the Sangarsh Samiti said adding that Mehbooba Mufti is record to have warned of dire consequences to the people of Jammu for launching a movement against wishes of militants and secessionists. PDP had warned that people of Jammu have to "pay the price" for resisting dictates of secessionists and anti-national forces. Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah have launched a malicious campaign to boost morale of terrorists and other anti-national forces and it was result of this vicious campaign that terrorists targeted innocent people of Jammu region. Today's attack exposed that there is direct nexus between terrorists and PDP and it has been established that the terrorist groups have working on the directions of PDP leadership, the Sangarsh Samiti observed. It is high time that authorities should constitute a high level committee to probe Mehbooba Mufti's link with terrorist organizations operating from other side of the border. Government should immediately take action against Mehbooba Mufti for exposing political-militant nexus in Kashmir Valley, the Samiti demanded. Taking strong exception of the state Government's failure to provide essential commodities to the Jammu based employees, who are forcibly being kept at Srinagar the Sangarsh Samiti said that the employees lodged in private hotels were at the brink of starvation as authorities even failed to provide them meals while most of these employees have been facing security threats. Expressing concern about the delay tactics being adopted by Governor NN Vohra for holding consultations, the Sangarsh Samiti said that four days have passed and no decision has been made by the authorities in this regard. It has warned that any further delay in the final decision may deteriorate the situation and provide opportunities to the anti-national forces to accomplish their nefarious designs. Any untoward eventuality thus caused will be the sole responsibility of state and central governments, the Samiti clarified. |
