| Over 50,000 throng Shankri mela | | | Early Times Reporter Panchari | Aug 28
Three-day historic Shankri Devta Mela at Panchari in Udhampur district concluded today .Over 50,000 people, attired in traditional and colorful dresses, thronged the mela site to offer prayers and gEt blessings of their revered deity. Shankri Devta temple is situated on a hillock in village Meer of block Panchari surrounded by meadows, lofty mountains and lush green forests. Village Meer and Block Headquarter, Panchari are linked with Pucca road from Udhampur town and Jammu as well. However, to reach the temple site, the devotees and visitors have to trek about two kilometers from both sides. For providing shelter to tourists, the J&K Department of Tourism has also constructed a Pucca tourist complex for their convenience on nominal charges where trekkers usually stay there while on trekking expeditions. Kitchen facility is also available there but the visitors have to bring eatables with them according to their stay plan. The District Administration, in coordination with Local Mela Committee, had organized adequate arrangements of security, drinking water and power supply, sanitation, medicare and transport facilities. The other highlights of the mela included holding of wrestling match, rural sports, cultural programmes by school students and installation of stalls of sweets, fruits, cosmetics items by local vendors and free langers by volunteer organizations. |
