Appealing the Governor N.N. Vohra to immediately revoke the order banning the local cable channels in Kashmir valley and remove the restrictions imposed on them, the NC chief spokesman and senior party leader Abdul Rahim Rather has said the local channels are doing a service to the people of Kashmir by disseminating local information to the people. He said the people of Kashmir valley have been deprived of all information in the absence of these channels and as such their operations should be restored immediately.
In a statement issued here today, Rather also expressed deep concern about the non publication and non circulation of local newspapers due to the curfew restrictions. He urged the government to ensure that the local newspapers are not only printed but their circulation should also be facilitated.
Rather also appealed to the local media, including the local channels, to perform their duties responsibly in the interest of the public. He said while the press should be free and fair they should understand their duties and act responsibly. They must realize that with their rights are attached certain responsibilities as well and the responsibility is to perform their role recognizing the power of the pen and the camera which has historically been shown to be more powerful than any weapon, he observed.
The NC chief spokesman further said that ‘any attempt to curb local media is against the ethos of democracy and shall lead to further alienation to the local population which is unwarranted and undesirable’.
He said under any vibrant society the role of an effective media, particularly the local media, is very important and as such the freedom of press must be respected. He urged the state administration to take emergent steps in this regard and ensure that the population of Kashmir valley is not deprived of their fundamental right to access information.
Rather said in a democracy the role of freedom of press needs to be respected. He said he was hopeful that the government will take immediate steps and restore the local channels. More so because in the present scenario cable is the most effective medium of information and entertainment for the people, said Rather.
