Caught off guard, always
8/28/2008 11:40:24 PM
The brutal incident of terrorism which left eleven persons dead, including three gun totting guerillas needs to be condemned in strongest possible words. Not only this act of terrorism but also the mindset and the minds behind such acts deserve highest condemnation. Our sympathies reach out to the family of Billoo Ram, particularly the small children and the women who are not expected to forget the gory incident of terror for rest of their life. Just an imagination of the incident sends shivers down the spine as how the women and the children would have passed their day amidst deafening sounds of bullets and shells. This is not the first incident of its kind. Jammu region is now exposed to such blatant incidents of terrorism. Memories of Samba encounter are still fresh in our minds. What is more shocking and surprising is the fact that how these terrorists dodge the guarding Border Security Force on the International Border and how they play hide and seek with other security forces in the interiors. Infiltration through Kanachak area is just not an isolated incident. It is part of a well orchestrated plan of Pakistan-based terrorists to sneak in through the area where they are supposed to do a quick action particularly in the Jammu region. A little over two months back, terrorists sneaked into Samba before attacking civilians in a nearby area. Security agencies were caught off guard as they were focusing on the usual route of infiltration along LoC. With the Army managing to thwart a majority of the infiltration bids along the Line of Control (LoC) this summer, the Pakistani handlers of militant outfits are trying to push in terrorists through the International Border (IB) now. That is the assessment of the security establishment here in the wake of the spurt in infiltration bids along the IB in recent days, with the latest one being the successful attempt by some militants to cross-over in the Kanachak area in the early hours of Tuesday. As per the latest assessment, there are 750-800 terrorists already active in J&K. Hundreds more are positioned in "launch pads" along the LoC and IB to cross over into J&K, with the aim being to take advantage of the ongoing turmoil in the state as well as unleash havoc in the run-up to the assembly polls. This time we can easily say that the militants took advantage of the internal turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir but this is high time that the security forces draw a well planned strategy to thwart such moves in the future. Particularly in view of the continuous internal turbulence and impending elections there has to be a well thought out strategy to deal with such situations in future.
