| Jammu on alert, combing on | | There may be more ultras hiding, says DGP | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 23
Even after calling off of the Chinore encounter, Jammu and its adjoining areas continue to be on a state of high alert as checking and frisking has been intensified in all areas following apprehensions of more militants having made their way to the region. Additional deployment of paramilitary forces has been made in several areas to keep a check on the situation and search operations have been launched in at least a dozen areas, particularly on the outskirts of Jammu City and in adjoining Samba district. Security has been beefed up in areas along the IB and LoC and police has intensified frisking and checking of vehicles with all entry and exit points in the city being sealed. "There could be more infiltrators hiding in some other areas on the outskirts of the city and the need is to maintain vigilance," Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda said. A high alert has been sounded here and police stations have been asked to monitor the situation round the clock in their respective areas, he said. Search and combing operations have been launched in Muthi, Gajansoo, Marh, Akhnoor, Gharota, Hiranagar and other places, including the adjoining border areas, were on, Khoda said. Besides screening of vehicles is being done by multi-tier security agencies, including the CRPF and Army, he said. Security has been beefed up along the Pathankote-Jammu-Udhampur railway line and stations, Deputy Inspector General, Railway, Niaz Mehmood said. The Army has been deployed for the purpose as an important section of the track runs close to the Indo-Pak border in Samba and Hiranagar districts, he said. Security forces had killed three militants who held 10 people captive for 19 hours in a house near here on Wednesday. Three of the hostages were killed while the others, including four children, were safe. After yesterday's militant attack in Chinore area on the city outskirts, IGP, Jammu Zone, K Rajindera today said security has been intensified and search operations are in progress in the entire region, as militants may ''attempt'' to attack the religious places with an intention of disturbing the ''communal harmony'' in Jammu and Kashmir. ''Following yesterday's Fidayeen attack, alert has been sounded in Jammu, while search operations have been strengthened in the city and its outskirts to track down any suspicious movement,'' Mr Rajindera said and asserted, ''Due to the prevailing situation in Jammu, militants attacking the religious places to create communal tension cannot be ruled out.'' Three militants and an army officer, among seven people, were killed during the 19-hour long gun battle at Chinore yesterday. According to sources, a group of militants had crossed the International Border from Kanhachak area and reached Chinore, where they intruded one of the houses and held hostage seven people, including four children. ''The anti-national elements may make all efforts to create communal divide in the state by attacking some of the sensitive areas and the religious places as well, but we have to be alert and take preventive measures to counter their nefarious designs,'' the IGP said. Besides Jammu city, the security in the Reasi, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and other bordering districts have also been tightened, while various security agencies have been directed to keep check on the anti-national elements, he added. Mr Rajindera, however, while commenting on the ongoing Jammu agitation asserted, ''It is the government and the Samiti, who has to find a solution to the existing land issue, but we cannot rule out any attempts being made by the militants, taking advantage of the ongoing movement and attacking the sensitive places.'' |
