Agitation completes two months

Exchange of stone pelting and tear smoking shells between protesters and police continued at Purani Mandi and adjoining localities while people took out rallies at several places as Jammu bandh today entered into 37th consecutive day while the agitation, spearheaded by Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) for restoration of 800 kanals land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), today completed two months.
>> In the afternoon, youths from Purani Mandi, Link Road, Raj Tilak Road, Pir Mitha and adjoining localities of Old City started pelting stones on police deployed at Parade Chowk and interior localities. Police fire teargas shells on the protesters.
Intermittent exchange of stoning and tear smoking continued between the two sides till late this evening. There was, however, no report of any major injury in either side. Reports said the youths were agitated against the arrest of their colleagues by police during past few days on the charges of stoning.
>> People in these localities continued to face the problems with several teargas shells and stones landing in their houses. The residents had to confine themselves to their houses.
>> Meanwhile, agitation across majority parts of Jammu region seeking restoration of land to the Shrine Board, today completed two months. First bandh and agitation in support of the demand was observed on June 30, a day after the then Ghulam Nabi Azad led coalition Government had withdrawn land from the SASB following protests in Kashmir and a letter written by Governor and SASB chairman NN Vohra that the land was not required by the Board.
>> Biggest rally of the day was taken out by the people, mostly youths of Sunderbani in Rajouri district, which trekked more than 30 kms to reach Nowshera chanting ‘Bum Bum Bhole’, ‘Bhole Baba Ke Vaste Khali Kardo Raste’, ‘NN Vohra Hai Hai’ and ‘Mehbooba and Omar Abdullah Hai Hai’. Carrying national flags and idols of Lord Shiva, the youths held demonstrations all along the road while taking out the rally on motor-cycles, scooters, cars and other vehicles. All along the route, they were joined by the youths.
>> At Nowshera town, the rally was joined by a large number of local people and a massive demonstration against Central and State Governments was held for delaying the restoration of land to the Shrine Board. Later, the youths returned to Sunderbani in the form of a similar procession.

> Sunderbani, Nowshera and Kalakot towns in Rajouri district have continuously been observing bandh in support of the agitation. Shops of minorities also remained closed in Rajouri town.
>> People of Hiranagar town and surrounding areas in Kathua district took out a huge rally and burnt an effigy of DySP Border Shiv Kumar Chouhan holding him responsible for the Public Safety Act (PSA) invoked on an innocent 19 year old youth Dinesh Kumar of Mertha, who has presently been lodged in Kot Bhalwal jail along with dreaded militants. Agitated women including family of the PSA detenue threw chappals on the effigy before it was set on fire. They charged Chouhan with ruining the career of an innocent youth.
>> Massive rallies were also taken out by the people with large presence of women in Kathua, Basohli, Billawar, Sanji Morh, Lakhanpur, Kunde Chak, Barnoti, Nagri, Ramkot and Nagrota towns of Kathua district, which observed a complete bandh for 37th successive day today with shops and all other business establishments closed in each and every town and rural areas of the district.
>> In Udhampur, the people including a large number of women took out a rally which marched through different localities and culminated at Main Chowk of the town. Instead of burning effigies, the protesters today hanged three effigies of Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti. The effigies were thrashed with sticks and chappals before they were hanged. The people dispersed peacefully. The rally was led by BJP leaders Pawan Gupta and Pawan Khajuria and Sangarsh Samiti district convenor Vikram Slathia among others.
>> Rallies were also taken out by the people in Ramnagar, Chenani, Majalata, Jib, Garhi, Rhembal and Tikri towns of the district.
>> Entire Udhampur district has been observing a total shutdown for last 37 days. At Dhar Road, people pelted stones on half a dozen tippers and mini-trucks, plying locally, and damaged their wind screens.
>> In Samba town, a ‘mushaira’ was organised for the protesters after they marched from Chowhatta Chowk to Main Chowk of Samba where the agitationists sat on dharna. The poets from Jammu recited their poems in favour of agitation and Lord Shiva. The people dispersed peacefully after the ‘mushaira’.
>> In Vijaypur town, another leader of Panthers Party, Amarnath went on fast-unto-death after his colleague Ved Prakash Sharma was lifted by the police yesterday and shifted to hospital. People continued their relay hunger strike in Ghagwal town. A rally was also taken out by the villagers of Gurha Slathia in Vijaypur town.
>> All towns and rural areas of Samba district continued to observe a bandh for last 37 days.
In Arnia town, a rally was taken out by the people including women and youths, which was led by Sangarsh Samiti local convenor Vinod Gupta. Protesters burnt the effigy of Governor NN Vohra before dispersing. In Bishnah town, people took a procession from Mata Mandir and marched in different parts of the town. Local Youth Club, Bishnah distributed free ration among the poor people.
>> People of Patoli Brahamana, Muthi, Barnai, Domana and surrounding localities took out a rally this evening which took the shape of a demonstration at Patoli Brahamana. Shouting religious and anti-Government slogans, the protesters dispersed after about an hour long demonstration.
People from Gandhi Nagar and adjoining localities marched to Gole Market where they held a ‘kirtan’ in praise of Lord Shiva and Durga Mata.
>> Rallies were taken out in different localities of the City, its outskirts, peripheries and other towns of Jammu district during the day today. However, the number of rallies has come down with people believing that an agreement between the Government and Sangarsh Samiti appeared to be in sight.
>> However, on its part, the Samiti today held Mohalla and Village wise meetings in different parts of the region to mobilise campaign in support of the agitation. Samiti leaders addressed the meetings at different places and lauded the support extended by the people to two month long agitation and 37 days of consecutive bandh.
>> Shops, business establishments and entire industrial sectors besides hotels and restaurants, educational institutions and majority of Government offices remained closed for 37th day today in entire Jammu City, its outskirts and peripheral areas besides all other major towns and even rural areas of the district. Akhnoor, Khour, Jourian and Pallanwalla towns of Akhnoor tehsil besides Miran Sahib town and RS Pura tehsil also observed a complete bandh.
>> Traffic in the City and outskirts besides Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Pathankot national highways and Jammu-Poonch road also remained off for last 37 days. All inter-State and local buses, matadors, three-wheelers, taxis and all other commercial vehicles didn’t turn up on the roads making the bandh a complete success and even as there was no one to force closure of shops and other business establishments, which the people have kept closed voluntarily.
In Reasi town, people took out a rally from Chowk Chabutra to Main Bazaar. Shops in Reasi town and surrounding areas like Talwara and Jyotipuram were also closed. Katra town, the base camp of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district, observed a bandh for 27th day. The Shrine Board and local people have organised langars for the yatris.

>> Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) demanded to expose P.D.P’s contacts with terrorist & Pakistan ISI. They also doubted that terrorists attack at “Chinore” is a prove to over contention and demanded high level inquiry in it to expose the real face of P.D.P and its stalwarts. Samiti also quated Ex-Governor Mr.S.K.Sinha who clearly stated, P.D.P’s contacts with Terrorists.
