| Threat of Valtengo-Nar like situation looms large | | | Srinagar, September 8 : The threat of a Valtengo-Nar like situation looms large over the heads of flood hit area of Shopian, as cracks are developing in hamlets which are still reeling under floods. Reports reaching Srinagar indicate that a huge population comprising of more than 5000 souls in flood hit Kachpathri area lying at a distance of 20 kilometers from Shopian were besieged in their houses for five long days and a vast area of cultivated land washed away by devastating floods is receding. A team of revenue officials headed by Naib Tehsildar Shopian has visit the area for on spot assessment of the damage done to the people of the area. Naib Tehsildar Shopian said that 10 residential houses and several hutments have been washed away by devastating floods in the area. The land along the banks of Rambiara Nallah, according to said Naib Tehsildar, is receding and eruption of a Valtengo-Nar like situation in the area is not ruled out. In a written communication to Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, the Naib Tehsildar has recommended rehabilitation of the affected area in Padpawan village which lies at a distance of 4 kilometers from Shopian township. Meanwhile sources revealed that cracks have developed in the Zoramanlu canal, the construction of which cost state exchequers crores of rupees. The irrigation department started construction of the canal in 1974 and completed in 1978. Allegations are galore that substandard construction material was used in the construction of the said canal. Soil erosion and land receding along the canal has resulted in washing away of thousands kanalas of land spread over a long distance of 12 kilometers. Fear has gripped people with panic and houses can't be used for residential purposes, when a Valtengo-Nar like situation is not ruled out in the area, lamented a legion of aggrieved people of this flood hit area.
