Antiques, idols, sapphires worth Rs 10 Cr recovered in Janipur raid, 4 held
With near total engagement of Police in dealing with the law and order situation arising out of the ongoing agitation, it is not only militancy which is showing up but the organized crime and smuggling too is going on rampantly. The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police have been able to lay hands on such a racket operating in idols and jewels worth millions of rupees. However, sources in the Police said that smuggling picked up like anything over past two months as criminals took advantage of the engagement of Police force in law and order situation. In a source generated information, the sleuths of Crime Branch raided a house in Janipur and busted a gang of smugglers engaged in smuggling of antiques and precious stones. Illicit antiques worth millions were recovered by the Police while operatives have been taken into custody. Giving details of the incident, a spokesman of the Police said that Crime Branch achieved a major success today when they recovered four Antique pieces of Sapphire weighting about one kilogram along with some antique coins from the possession of some suspects from Janipur area. On receipt of information that some smugglers had come to Jammu for purchase of Antique Idols and statue made of sapphire which is very precious items. Crime Branch, Jammu under the supervision of Ashok Kumar Chib, Deputy Superintendent of Police Crime Branch Jammu raided the shop in Janipur area. Four persons were arrested. They have been identified as Subash Chander Jain son of Payara Lal Jain, resident of Kocha Kaka Ram, Jain Bazar, Jammu; Chander Kumar son of Ram Lal, resident of Khadak Panja Kalakote, Rajouri; Zafar Hussain Ganai son of Abdul Hamid Ganai resident of Hadirpora, Janipur and Subash Chander Sharaf son of Choudhary Chuni Lal Sharaf resident of Bohri, Talab Tillo. The Crime Branch has recovered from their possession two idols one of Radha and Krishna, One Shivling and one statue of Bhagwan Mahavir and one ornamental pendant carved out nature Blue Sapphire were seized. The value of seized items in the International Market is more than 10 crore. A case FIR No. 24/2008 U/S 4/5 Sapphire act 1982, 5/25 Antiqueties Art Treasures act, 379-RPC has been registered in Crime Branch, Jammu and investigation taken up to ascertain the source of purpose destination of these previous material. Two Tata Safari vehicles bearing registration number of Chandigarh and another of Delhi were seized from the suspect. The operation was conducted under the supervision of IGP Crime J&K, SP Vaid-IPS and J.P Singh-IPS SSP Crime Branch, Jammu. Sources said Zafar Hussain Ganai is the son of a retired Police officer who was shot dead at Bhaderwah by militants in the area when he was sitting in a barbar shop for cutting his hair. He was running a work shop in the area. |
