Heavy polling was recorded in LAHDC Kargil which went to polls today to elect 24- member council. There was no report of any incident from any of the constituency that went to polls today. There had been unprecedented rush of voters before the polling booths right from the start of the polling which began at 8 in the morning. Large queues of voters including the women were seen eagerly awaiting their turn to exercise their franchise. According to the district election authority more than 70 percent electorate exercised their franchise and the exact poll percentage would be known only after the final reports are received from the presiding officers. The 94 year old Haji Ghulam Hussain, 93 year old Safdar Ali and 91 year Mohammandhu were among those who exercised their franchise at Aklchamal, Trespone and GM-pure polling stations respectively. At several polling stations the woman outnumbered the male voters for whom separate queues were made. The district administration had set up 12 separate polling stations across the district for the woman voters. Satish Nehru, Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, who is also the district election authority, and SSP Garib Dass, personally supervised the arrangements to ensure free and fair polling. They visited as many as 16 polling stations and expressed satisfaction over the smooth conduct of polls. The district administration had set up 223 polling stations for 24 council constituencies having an electorate of 83,883. Out of 223 polling stations 24 were declared as hyper sensitive and 36 as sensitive. Over 1,000 police personnel including the security forces were deployed in the district for peaceful and smooth conduct of elections. |
