| Jammuites await delivery of their mails, couriers | | Chithhi Na Koi Sandesh…… | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 30
About a score courier agencies, operating in Jammu, have not been able to deliver letters, packets and parcels for the last 40 days with the result their office rooms stand flooded with the letters and parcels. Even after the restoration of normalcy these agencies may take over a month to clear the delivery process. And thousands of families waiting for the delivery of the parcels are worried as they are not sure whether the agencies will deliver the packets to them after the withdrawal of the call for Bandh. The case is similar to the postal services which too have remained suspended for bout two months. According to senior functionaries of the post offices about 1200 mail bags are awaiting for sorting in the RMS centre at the Railway station. They could not say whether the piled up mail and parcels is in thousands or touched a lakh. They said that on a couple of occasions they had decided to run skeleton postal services but that too could not be run when some post offices were attacked. Even the postal vans were stoned forcing them to observe complete shutdown. As a result of suspension in the transport services the postal authorities failed to send mail bags to other districts in the Jammu region. The postal authorities said it may take about two months for sorting out the mail bags after peace was restored to Jammu. This also required additional manpower which the postal authorities may not be able to arrange. They said while the mail from outside the state continued to pile up more was being received by the RMS which too had space problem for accommodating these bags. However, officials could send mail bags by air to Srinagar. Even the speed post services have been hit. People have been asked to collect their mail received through speed post from the speed post centre at the railway station where people could also book their speed post. Since the postal and courier services remained paralyzed, people banking on cheques and bank drafts from their companies outside the state, have begun feeling the pinch of cash crunch. Even if they manage to get these cheques from the post offices they are not able to deposit or en-cash these owing to shutdown in the banks. |
