| Azad chairs cabinet meeting, reviews flood situation, rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures | | Rs 20.66 crore released for immediate relief to flood affected | | Srinagar, September 08 - The Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad here today reviewed the flood situation in the state. The Ministers who were assigned various districts for monitoring situation and the measures taken in the special cabinet meeting held on September 3, apprised the cabinet about extent of flood damages and the rescue and relief measures which have already been taken and are presently being taken in the affected areas. Suggestions were also made based on past and current experiences to prevent flooding of low-lying areas and minimizing flood damages. The cabinet while reviewing the flood situation and relief and rehabilitation measures being carried out in the flood affected areas of the state decided to release Rs. 20.66 crore, which is 50 percent of the estimated funds required for immediate succour/relief and temporary restoration of public utilities. Of this, Rs. 3 crore have been released for providing immediate relief and succour to the flood affected people. These include Rs. 2 crore for Kashmir division and Rs. 1 crore for Jammu division. Similarly, cabinet ordered release of Rs.4.87 crore for PHE sector that includes Rs.2.37 crore for Kashmir division and Rs. 2.5 crore for Jammu division. Likewise, cabinet decided to release Rs. 2.84 crore for power sector including Rs. 1.13 crore for Kashmir and Rs. 1.71 crore for Jammu division. For flood control sector, it decided to release Rs. 2 crore each for Kashmir and Jammu divisions while under roads and building sector, the cabinet also released Rs. 2 crore each for Kashmir and Jammu divisions. It also decided to release Rs. 1.45 crore each to Municipal Corporations and Rs. 25 lakh each under health sector to both the divisions. The cabinet also decided that free ration @ 5 Kg per head for three months will be provided in respect of villages which were totally marooned/submerged in water. A special girdawari will be conducted of the areas affected by the floods between September 10-30, 2006 for assessing loss to crops both agriculture and horticulture due to floods, draughts or other calamities. Fire tenders will be utilized for supply of drinking water and dewatering purpose, wherever necessary, particularly in interior areas of Srinagar and Jammu cities. The local police station shall ensure that all the dead animals are appropriately buried. A comprehensive long term proposal for flood control measures in both divisions particularly Jehlum and Sindh basins of Kashmir and Tawi and Chenab basins of Jammu would be prepared by Irrigation and Flood Control Department, based on past and current experiences, with a view to preventing floods and minimizing flood damages in future, the cabinet decided. The cabinet also decided that the requisite memorandum would be sent to Government of India immediately so that the central team visits the state at the earliest. The Health and Medical Education Department shall take all precautionary measures to prevent any epidemic resulting from environment and sanitation problems caused by the floods.
