Even as the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) is yet to initiate the process of short listing the names, it has been decided that the state is going to engage a foreign player in the Ranji Trophy squad in the coming domestic cricketing season in the country.
In addition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has allowed the affiliated associations to engage four `guest’ players to their side from outside the State.
A decision in this regard was taken at a high level meeting of the BCCI Technical Committee, which met yesterday at Mumbai under the chairmanship of Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar.
As per BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, one of the four players could be a cricketer from overseas, having played at least 10 Tests and/or 20 ODIs. However, a maximum of three 'Guest' players will be permitted to figure in the playing XI at a given point of time.
"The last date for the State associations to register the 'Guest' players will be 1st September every year," Shah said.
When contacted, general secretary of JKCA, Salim Khan said, “I have been informed by the BCCI about the technical committee decision, but I’m helpless to anything in the wake of ongoing curfew in Valley.”
However, he was positive that the things would move in the right direction so as to achieve the desired result as soon as the normalcy returns to the state. “We have already nominated a committee to take a decision with regard to coming cricketing season. Unfortunately, we have not been able to meet even once because of the ongoing agitation,” said Khan expressing his inability to initiate the process of engaging a foreign player in J&K team.
Meanwhile, the committee also deliberated on the amendments in the playing conditions for domestic tournaments and there was a consensus that the original 'Power play' rule be retained in the forthcoming season.
