| Isolated PDP nitpicks Amarnath peace formula | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 1
The August 31 Amarnath land agreement has not gone down well with the People's Democratic Party leadership. Its chief Mehbooba Mufti has termed it 'biased' and has warned that it will further deepen the fissures between Jammu and Kashmir.. THERE IS a well-known adage that kids are told to behave themselves with the phrase ’tang nai kar, nahi teh bhaoo aai jana hai ’, especially, when children go out of control during dusk. Its literal translation is: ’Behave yourself or the monster will come.’ The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leadership seems to have adopted the same tactic as one of its main political propaganda and now is creating a hype that that peace formula on Amarnath land will have dire consequences.
Whenever it feels something is slipping out of its hands or lacks sincerity on an issue, it conveniently diverts the blame onto the Central government or its arch rival political party, the National Conference, even if the latter is not actually involved. For example, it is factually clear that when the then Ghulam Nabi Azad-led government withdrew the land order, the state government didn’t bother about calling any representative, who was opposing the order on July 1. Since the National Conference has supported the peace deal, now the president of PDP, Mehbooba Mufti is left with no choice, but, to oppose it purposely. After rejection of the Centre’s peace formula by her father, Mehbooba is crying hoarse that this will have dire consequences and when it was inked as a document, she termed it as unilateral and a decision, which overruled the sensitivities of the state’s majority community. "Any decision on this matter should have been taken only through consensus," she said in a statement, adding, "A Jammu appeasement policy will further increase the alienation of Kashmiris." But, the question is that where was such a consensus when the Kashmiri leadership including PDP called for revocation of the order? The PDP president now is pitching hard that the coordination committee be taken into confidence and is describing the decision as ’unilateral and rejection of the sentiments of the majority community of the state. But, the PDP president has perhaps forgotten that if a similar decision taken about a month ago, was bilateral or unanimous and whether the sensitivity of the minority community had been considered at that time! It needs to be mentioned that since the day of its emergence, PDP has always gone against the NC and always hijacked the Hurriyat’s agenda, be it the ’healing touch policy’ or the ’surrender policy’ or the ’self-rule’ or the ’opening of roads’ or the ’amnesty to the terrorists’ or likewise, but have never raised any issue for strengthening the relationship between J&K and the Indian nation. And feeling isolated once again, it has now decided to raise the ante and lap up the extremist slogan of Kashmiri alienation. But, Mehbooba or her party has never bothered about the alienation of Jammuites or Ladakhis. Why can only Kashmir be alienated? Why is PDP feeding propaganda instead of saying that the temporary use of land will not create any problems in Kashmir’s demography, but the decision is aimed to resolve the issue so that people may get respite from curfews and bandhs? Feeling that NC has scored against PDP by voting for the said ’peace formula’ to resolve the land row, PDP has now coined another slogan that it was a unilateral decision. To have an edge in the Valley over NC, the PDP president said that it wanted to restore peace, but this decision will have dire consequences. Mehbooba also attacked former J&K chief minister and the National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah for welcoming the agreement. It has to be mentioned that he and his son and NC chief, Omar Abdullah, sensing the gravity of the issue discussed broad perspectives of the Jammu agitation and then told that NC was only in favour of return of peace and normalcy in the state. In contrast to the PDP’s extreme politics, the NC duo candidly underlined that the party is only for peace and not for politics on religious matters. "People with no base and having vested interests can indulge in politics in Kashmir and in Jammu," they added. |
