| Irresolute UPA, resurgent terror | | | Sunita Vakil
It would not be an exaggeration to suggest that the state of security presently prevailing in our country is absolutely pathetic. With the ever-increasing ferocity of jihadi attacks, the powers that be can be expected to do little besides advise people to maintain "communal harmony". There is no denying the fact that terrorists have stepped up their anti-India activities in the past few years. Jihadis select sensitive and important targets with impunity. They damage life and property, instilling fear among the common people.
And yet the Union Government, instead of demonstrating determination and resolve to combat terror, is choosing to do nothing. This is all because of its policy of appeasement. In spite of the expanding theatre of jihadi violence, the so-called 'secular' regime headed by the Congress has been genuflecting to Islamists with little or no care for the masses. It is, therefore, not surprising that terrorists are launching increasingly daring strikes designed to inflict maximum damage. Be it the bombings in Delhi on the eve of Diwali, the attack on the Ram Mandir in Ayodhaya, the Sankat Mochan temple terror strike in Varanasi, the attack at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, the Mumbai, Hyderabad and Jaipur bombings or the recent Chinore hostage incident in Jammu, the UPA Government is least bothered about the lives and safety of the people. What it really cares about is its vote-bank, which it steadfastly continues to maintain at the cost of the country's sovereign integrity. Though this was not the first time that terrorists have used innocent civilians as hostages, last Wednesday's hostage crisis that lasted for more that 19 hours, highlights the fact that we have an irresolute Government at the helm of affairs. That the jihadis have again outfoxed the intelligence agencies is a grim reminder that the Government's tall claims of creating an effective anti-terror mechanism are entirely hollow. The Chinore incident has left people fearing the worst. All recent intelligence reports suggest that terrorist activities will only intensify. But with a Government that can do little else than lose sleep over the plight of terrorists, it is anybody's guess how well prepared our security agencies are. |
