Police-public bonhomie returns

Jammu | Sep 1

It was almost a battle of Kakhi versus all other shades on the streets of this Winter Capital City for nearly two months but there is a quick change –the cops and civilians are fast getting to their normal relations –a good sign indeed.
Over past two months, there were scenes of teenagers pelting stones and glass bottles on the cops and in the reciprocation the policemen shooting teargas shells and even in many cases forcefully dragging the civilians could be seen on Local TV channels. But on Sunday, the virtual victory day for Jammuites the picture was totally changed, both the policemen and civilians were again seen in a friendly and cordial relations, whereas in the last two months there was an obvious bitterness and hatred between the citizens and Cops. On the Jubilant day of 31 August, there were celebration in all over the Jammu,at many places in the old city the men in Khaki were also invited by the people in the celebrations, appreciably the Policemen did also not miss this opportunity and responded in a positive manner, and joined the people in their festivity and even shared Sweets with them.
Both the sides did forget the scars and scenes of the agitation to start up from a fresh point. At many places the constables and even S.H.O of Police could be seen dancing with the general public in their celebrations. Perhaps the end of the agitation is significantly more important for the Police than the common man on street. Their participation depicts that after all they are also human being and cannot be isolated from the society even in the most crucial time. it seems that, this time the policemen and public both have realized that both need a good understanding to change the conventional image of Khakki. It is to be noted that a cordial and friendly relation of Police and Public would be an advantageous for the society to fight and counter the threat of this crucial time of Militancy and otherwise also to eradicate evils from the society and to bring the crime graph down. But at the same time it was not so pleasant but still a fear flows in many minds and hearts. On the same Sunday, Shilpi Dogra, widow of Kuldip Dogra, hero of this agitation and so called victory of Jammu rejected the offer of government to join the police department as an S.P.O ' How Can I wear the Khaki, even today my children are scared and feel insecure whenever they see any policeman' she further added and advised that no person from civil society should join the ' evil force' she still feels the reminiscent of that night when her husband's body was allegedly mishandled and she was mercilessly beaten and abused by a D.S.P. Shilpy's statement vindicates that the police need to do a lot to clean their image because their uniform is still blotted with the spots of blood of many innocent victims of police brutalities. Three Sr. S.P of police department were replaced in Jammu in less than one month, but none of them could do a charisma to build confidence in the heart of Jammuites. With every change of the top cop, there was even more violence was , shockingly the famous Purani Mandi area notorious for stone pelting and violence is just 200 meters away from the Police Control Room at parade from where top cop of district Jammu officiates. Hence the government and police department need to revive their strategy and police requires a better trainings and other equipment to deal with the civilians. Importantly the policemen who always remain in a depression does lack any consultation of any psychologists to train them to tackle the varying situations. General public does also need to treat them as a human being and must accept the fact that they do also hail from this very society of their own.
