| Jammu bounces back to normalcy | | | Sumit Sharma Jammu | Sep 1
A new enthusiasm, fresh energy, smiles on faces and no regret for the losses summed up the scene as Jammu bounced to normal activity and markets resumed their business after a shut down of more than two months there was a brief while of normalcy in the middle of July since the agitation began. All market places, government offices, schools, banks and universities have reopened after nearly two-month long shutdown. Shopkeepers cleaned their shops and reopened them in Raghunath Bazar, Residency Road, Purani Mandi and Jain Bazar areas of old city, which was littered with spent tear-gas shells, half burnt tyres and effigies during the agitation. Shopkeepers and Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) officials cleaned the city of tonnes of partially burnt effigies, tyres, tear-gas shells and other garbage that was littered across the length and breath of the city. "The city has been given a clean look, particularly market places, and all the garbage was removed," a JMC official said. The police removed all the temporary barricades and barbed wire fencing yesterday as authorities lifted curfew in Jammu, Samba, Udhampur, Kathua and Reasi last night, police said, adding that there is no night curfew in these districts. CRPF and police are continuing to maintain a close vigil in these areas. The deserted roads once again hosted the rush of vehicles. People in large numbers were seen come out of their houses and rushed to the shops to take essentials. The duo festivals Holi and Depawali were celebrated on the allotment of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board. During the day people applied colours of different kinds on each other faces and during night time crackers were exploded besides houses were lit with lamps. Earlier it was not easy for the government to take immediate decision whether land should be given to Shrine Board or not. If the land was given to SASB Srinagar boiled and if not Jammu burnt. On the other hand PDP leader Mehabooba Mufti threatened of dire consequences if demands of Jammuites acceded with which also added the fuel in the fire causing massive resentment among Jammuites . The live example was that people made bid to set the house of PDP MLA Shanti Devi on fire. Her house was also ransacked. In another incident a green colored vehicle was also burnt to ashes by the mob thinking that the vehicle was belonged to one of the leader of the PDP.A bid was also made to set the house in which the vehicle parked on fire. Later it was confirmed that the vehicle and house were belonged to BJP spokes man. Even leaders from other parties who for cheap politics faced wrath of people. Communal clashes were also on the for front. Many people lost their lives weather in Srinagar or Jammu. Be late but true land was restored to SASB but this made the Srinagar on boil. Many a places curfew was imposed to shut the people in their houses to avert the wrath of the people. Leaders of Hurriyat were also house arrested. The authorities now on the toes to keep the life in Srinagar on track. Leaving all this thing aside now question arises what we have achieved and what has lost in the turmoil. The appropriate answer will flash in our mind if we cogitate probably we who for our pity interest elected those enfficient candidates. The present agitation is the eye opener. |
