| JKHA no more `loyal’ to KPS Gill | | Association remains `neutral’ as efforts afoot to take over hockey | | Sanjeev Sharma Jammu | Sep 2
Otherwise a strong supporter of Super Cop, KPS Gill, who ceased to be president of the suspended IHF’s (Indian Hockey Federation) Executive Body, the Jammu and Kashmir Hockey Association (JKHA) plays `neutral’, anticipating a possible change in the reign of the Federation. Led by prominent businessman of Jammu, Narinder Batra, the JKHA has, however, not annoyed any of the three strong groups presently eying the office of the IHF and has agreed to take part in their respective meetings. Otherwise suspended by mother of all associations, Indian Olympic Association (IOC) on corruption charges by one of his colleagues, Gill has called the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at New Delhi on September 17. On the other hand, IOA-appointed ad-hoc committee of IHF and the Council of Bengal Hockey Association is in the process of fixing the dates for holding similar meets in near future. “Since we are an independent state unit, we are open to everyone whosoever invites us to discuss the welfare of hockey,” general secretary of the JKHA, Jagjit Singh told SAN. “I have received a call from ad-hoc committee for a proposed meeting with the state associations in near future. Consequently, I, on behalf of the Association, have given the consent,” informed Jagjit. The JKHA has also been invited to attend a seminar on `Future Goals of Indian Hockey’ organized by Council of Bengal Hockey Association and sponsored by the Sahara Group. Meanwhile, convenor of the ad-hoc committee running the affairs of the game in the country, Mohammad Aslam, has said that being head of a suspended body, Gill’s calling a meeting `makes no sense’. “It makes no sense because officially Gill is not an authority anymore. The IHF’s executive body was suspended following a corruption scandal so it could be an illegal move on his part,” maintained Aslam. Optimistic about a possible solution to the ongoing trouble in the IHF, JKHA secretary said, “We are very clear on out agenda of seeking approval for hosting the Indira Gandhi Gold Cup in Jammu, which is a regular feature of Association as and when we will meet these people.” It is pertinent to mention here that the JKHA in past enjoyed good relations with KPS Gill. With the return of Narinder Batra, who dared to contest unsuccessful presidential elections against Gill as Association president, the things changed forever. Batra remained senior vice-president of the IHF representing J&K. |
