| GICs to pay crores of rupees to compensate losses, claims pour in | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 2
General Insurance Companies in Jammu and Kashmir have suffered losses worth several crores of rupees which they have to pay in lieu of claims filed by owners of houses and vehicles which were damaged in the two-month long turmoil and violence in the state. After the 60-day shutdown ended on Monday General Insurance Companies have been flooded with claims for compensation for the damages their vehicles and houses suffered in violence. Sources maintained that these companies may have to bear compensation to the tune of nearly a crore of rupees. The sources said that the maximum claims have come from Kishtwar where scores of houses and vehicles were damaged and burnt in arson and violence. Several Government departments, especially the police and paramilitary forces, have also filed compensation claims for the damage to their vehicles. A couple of surveyors, engaged by the companies, today said "even if some vehicle has suffered damage not in the violence, their owners too have filed claims. And we do not have any proof for belying their claims”. They said during the last two days they had to work overtime on taking pictures of the damaged vehicles and on preparing the assessment reports. Reports from various General Insurance Companies revealed that more than 100 trucks have suffered major or minor damage while they were traveling on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway where protesters pelted stones on these. |
