| 3-member fact finding team holds administration responsible for Poonch incidents | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 2
The 3-member fact finding team constituted by the Sangarsh Samiti to take stock of the situation arising out of August 23 ugly incidents in Poonch has squarely held the district administration for these gory incidents. The team comprising Dr. Nirmal Singh, Surinder Agarwal and Ramesh Shaberwal in its report alleged that the concerned officials and agencies did not take precautionary measures to stop the occurrence of ugly incidents and nor did they act swiftly and promptly during the time of arson and looting by the majority community. The team during their visit to Mendher also met prominent people of both the communities including Mohd. Aliyas, Mohd. Shakor, Mahesh Chander Sharma, Sanjeev Kumar, Mohd. Khurshid Mir, Mohd. Yunus and Praveen Kumar Sawhney and appreciated their role in maintaining communal harmony. They also lauded the role of police Officers- Sanjay Singh Dy. SP and S.K Dutta S.H.O. Brig (Retd) Suchit Singh Convenor SAYSS said that Samiti believes that members of the majority community who had come from the adjoining areas perpetrated atrocities on the minority community at the behest of Hurriyat leaders of the Valley. The police remained silent spectator and even the army, which was at the disposal of civil administration, was not authorized to intervene and bring the situation under control. As many as 77 shops including 52 belonging to the minority community were burnt down by spraying petrol and diesel by the anti-nationals who had attacked the town in a well planned manner. Rather the miscreants had planned to set on fire the entire area inhabited by minority community to flames, but with the courageous efforts of the Hindus and Sikhs this could not happen, he said and added that the fact finding team in its report has assessed the loss to the tune of nearly eight crore of rupees. Brig Singh said that the Samiti has impressed upon the divisional administration to order an independent inquiry to identify the culprits behind this gory incident. The Samiti, he said has also strongly urged the authorities to take appropriate measures to instill confidence in the frightened minority community by reining in undesirable and communal forces and sanction a financial package so that the losses suffered by the minority and majority communities are adequately compensated and their grievances redressed, the Samiti Convenor demanded. |
