SKUAST celebrates World Soil Day

Jammu, Dec 5: SKUAST-Jammu celebrated World Soil Day through organization of awareness programme on healthy soil for sustainable horticulture at Advanced Centre for Horticulture Research (ACHR), Udheywalla under the guidance of Dr. J. P. Sharma, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-Jammu.
In his message, he emphasized that food security is directly linked with healthy soil and soil is the great connector of all kind of lives, as being home to one fourth of the Earth’s biodiversity.
Dr. Jag Pal Sharma, ADR and Incharge, ACHR, in his address advised the farmers to make judicious use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. He suggested the shift from chemical farming to biological farming. Dr. P.K. Rai, Sr. Scientist and coordinator of the programme made the farmers aware of management practices for maintaining soil healthy and demonstrated soil testing and use of soil health card to the participants. Dr. Vikas Tandon, Professor, briefed farmers about ongoing initiatives of Centre of Excellence, Horticulture at ACHR, Udheywalla. Dr. Parshant Bakshi, also highlights the importance of healthy soil. Dr. Vishal Gupta, explained the role of bio-inoculants for maintaining soil healthy. Also on the occasion, Dr. Akash Sharma, Asst. Prof., Dr. Sheetal Dogra, Asst. Prof., Dr. Susheel Sharma, and Dr. Rakesh Kumar also spoke on the different aspects of horticultural crop production.
During the interactive discussion on soil health card, participants displayed their keen interest in soil testing kit. Tilak Raj, progressive farmer of Akalpur village and Ashwani Sharma, progressive farmer of Sangrampur village appreciated the efforts of university team for the programme. Packets of bio-stimulant and bio-fertilizers also distributed among the participants. Dr. Sushil Sharma, Asst. Prof., extended vote of thanks to the participants at the end of the programme.
