| Centre discusses poll timing with JK leaders | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 4
Though the Congress, the National Conference, the PDP, CPI (M) and Jammu Kashmir Democratic Party are opposed to the postponement of the Assembly election in the state they are highly concerned about the situation in the Kashmir valley where groups of people continue to defy curfew restrictions. Spokesman of the state unit of the Congress, Ravinder Sharma, today said that the Congress is not in favour of postponing the election but holding of the poll depended on the situation in Kashmir. He said the ultimate decision has to be taken by the Election Commission and the Government of India. Reports received here said that the central Government was seeking opinion from leaders of various political parties on the timing of the election. Senior Congress functionaries in Delhi and various central agencies have had interaction with a number of political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief of Jammu Kashmir Democratic Party, Ghulam Hassan Mir, and the CPIM leader, M.Y.Tarigami, visited Delhi the other day where they had discussions with men who matter. In reply to a question Ghulam Hassan Mir said "yes we were in Delhi to discuss ways and means for restoring normalcy in the Kashmir valley." Asked whether they discussed the timing of the election he said "election is not the current issue but the valley's law and order situation." Though most of the political leaders in the state favour holding of election by the middle of November they do not oppose postponement if the situation did not improve. They want the next election to be free and fair so that majority of voters participate in the poll process which was only possible under normal situation. |
