Jammu | Sep 4

Helpless in the light of near two-month long agitation over Shri Amarnath Land row, the Directorate of Physical Education, University of Jammu has decided to plead the case before the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for more time to host the North Zone Inter-University Table Tennis Tournament here.
If the request were considered, it would be after a gap of 12 years that Jammu University would be hosting the mega event on the campus. The last Inter-University event was hosted here in 1996.
In fact, Jammu University was approved by AIU as the host of the North Zone Table Tennis competitions through its calendar of activities, a copy of which was dropped here on June 25. Since, the zonal competitions are to be completed before the Inter-zonal event, the Directorate of Physical Education had planned to conduct the tournament in the mid of September, but things got disturbed due to the agitation in Jammu.
The All India (zonal) Inter-University Table Tennis Tournament, as per already drawn AIU fixture, is scheduled to be held from October 22. Moreover, the fixtures for this event are to be drawn in advance, before
September 22.
“It was our proposal with the AIU to allot us the zonal competitions, but because of the agitation we could not make necessary arrangements. Still, we don’t want to miss the opportunity to host the event,” Assistant Director Physical Education, University of Jammu, Dr Sonam Angchuk. told SAN.
Now, in an attempt to seek more time from AIU, the JU has started an exercise to motivate the people concerned, he said.
“The Directorate held a meeting, chaired by the Director Physical Education, Prof Lokesh Verma, in this regard yesterday. It was decided amicably to request AIU for a suitable fresh date in the month of November.
In case the event is re-allotted for November, JU would be hosting around 450 players and officials during five-day meet.
“About 38 universities, falling in the North Zone, usually turn up for the zonal events. The table tennis team consists of five men and equal number of women paddlers besides two officials, which means, around 450 athletes would be taking part in the competitions,” informed table tennis coach of Department of Physical Education, Ramesh Magotra.
