Bhum Bhum Bholey school kiyun kholey
9/4/2008 11:56:06 PM
Nirbhay Jammual

"Bhum Bhum Bholey school kiyun kholey" is the new mantra that students chant in their classrooms. And whenever they feel bored with the prolonged lecture sessions they start thumping the desks chanting "Bhum Bhum Bholey school Kiyun Kholey."They do it not because they are opposed to attending the schools. They do it when they have been told that the duraton for each lesson session has been extended by 10 minutes to cover the syllabus. In certain schools the authorities have cancelled sports and other cultural activities after they found that by devoting more time on explaining lessons they would be able to make up for the loss of time students had to suffer owing to the two-month long turmoil in Jammu.
Some of the school authorities plan to curtail the winter break only for covering the entire syllabi.Already the syllabus of school students is so large that kids are seen panting while dragging their heavy satchels loaded with books and notebooks. One has to learn, rote or understand lengthy processes required for solving questions in mathematics, social sciences, English, and other subjects. Well imagine the impact of the loss during the closure of schools for two months. No doubt some of the school authorities sought help from the local TV channels where teachers explained lesson after lesson to the sudents who were supposed to watch them in their homes. But reports indicated that most of the students preferred watching films to listening to the monologue from teachers.
No doubt present day education requires private coaching, regular guidance in the school is a must. But if students are compelled to undergo prolonged sessions in the classrooms it may add to the physical and mental strain of kids. What is then the solution ? Concerned authorities need either to curtail the syllabus or introduce the grace marks system.By postponing the examination calender students would be faced with new problems during the next academic session. Another alternative could be that the setting of question papers, whether in the universities or in Board or in the schools, be such as 80 per cent questions are framed from the first five chapters of the books. This could help students who have not been able to cover the entire course or syllabus.
One may not favour promotion without examination, a pattern that used to be adopted during wars or during any emergency in the past. Such a procedure can harm those who remain merit hoders.Schools and colleges should introduce the system of issuing guess and test papers so that the question paper setters keep those before them while setting the question papers. It is likely to reduce the physical and mental labour of students. Those manning the universities, boards and educational institutions should realise that it was war against the land loss and students were in the forefront of this war carrying the tricolour in their hands. Their struggle has borne fruit and now they should not be allowed to suffer failure in the examinations.
