| Town still awaits its mail | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 4
Almost every thing is coming back to track after two months of shut down except for the postal services as hundreds of mails are still locked in the bags. “I have missed my interview as I didn’t get the call letter in times…my family is dying with hunger as I have not received the money order sent by my son…we are yet receive the Rakhi thread…” these are the sentences often heard these days after turmoil. Early Times correspondent visited various post offices and met officials of the department to ascertain as to why after a week mails have not been delivered to the people yet. SK Tikoo Post Master of the Head Post Office Gandhi Nagar said that the working of the department was going on even during the agitation but few people pelted stones on the premises of the post office forcing the officials to shut down the office. “Since then the staff also refused to report at work”. He said that mails were held up at the Railway Mail Service as driver of the department refused to deliver the same to the concerned post offices, resulting dump of the letters in the RMF. He said that now the bags of mails have been dumped in the post office though special mail carriages are being pressed to services still it will take time to stream line the mails. Talking to Early Times, the Chief Post Master General, DK Budki, who is also a renowned writer, pointed out several reasons behind the delay of mail delivery in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir is that it is one of the states in which postal department has to depend on the vehicles as train services are not available. The commercial vehicles were halted during the agitation which held up mails. However clearance of mails is being done in large scale in Jammu city but strike of SRTC buses is one of the obstacles to deliver the mails in far flung areas. He said not only this department’s employees are not willing to go to the Kashmir as they feel insecurity in the region and simultaneously employees in Kashmir have also same feeling in this condition department from Jammu pressed vehicles carrying mails to Ramban and from where mails are loaded to other vehicles for Kashmir region. He said that ninety six bags are still to deliver to Kashmir. Is it the responsibility of the state government to press the services of the private vehicles for mail as had been done during British Rule is a million dollar question. |
