| Teacher-pupil warmth getting friendlier than ever | | | Munish Gupta Jammu | Sep 5
There is a synonym for the word ‘teacher’ in Sanskrit. It is ‘guru’—the one who dispels darkness and kindles the light within. The teacher has the ability to not only mould the students’ minds, but also affect their attitude and character. The abilities of the teaching community have been acknowledged worldwide. In ancient Greece, teachers were responsible for inculcating good values and developing the facilities of logic and rhetoric in their students-most of which is sustained in varied forms even today. The role of a teacher today is that of a friend, philosopher and guide, while his prime responsibility rests in the restoration of the higher values of life among the present generation. Principal of MAM Collge Baloria says that in today’s times, the edifice of faith, trust, fellow-feeling, loyalty, mutual help, fair play, sacrifice, obedience to law, are crumbling rapidly under the weight of materialism and distortion of the real meaning of the word freedom. The role of a teacher, at this critical juncture, then assumes paramount importance as it is the teacher alone who can impart moral education to his pupils. The youth of today has thrown all scruples to winds. Indiscipline has become its licensed priority. Discipline and restraint hold little significance in the existing scenario where people seem to have lost a sense of perspective. Higher values have become the things of the past. Prof Keshav Sharma from Jammu University said that in past, teachers were doing selfless service. But now, with money entering the profession, the relationship between teachers and students had become more or less of give-and-take. He added that teachers were failing to be a moral guide and a role model for students. When asked why now-a-days students do not want to be a teacher, he said things were changing as many students want to join academics. Teaching had become a paying profession besides gaining respect and quality of life. He said teachers were still nation builders and it was the duty of society to ensure that mentors get their due. He also added that a teacher can rebuild the crumbling citadel of spiritualism. The rise of science and technology has not only wasted the spiritual side of our life but also snatched away the finer sensibilities holding considerable thoughts in our hearts. A teacher can build up a balanced personality inside his pupils in which humanistic approach to life is of greater significance rather than the intense competition and a mad rush for materialistic belongings. The spirit of fellowship and human sympathy can be inculcated by the teacher in a steady manner. Adherence to higher principles of life cannot be expected out of the young generation unless the teachers stick to those moral values themselves. As Buddha said, “A man should first direct himself in the way he should go. Only then should he instruct others.” Prof Hemla from Govt Women College Gandhi Nagar said, "These days, teachers are not respected by the students as they were in the yesteryear. The reason is that the society has turned materialistic. Commercialism rules today."" She also added that the teachers should introspect on the Teachers' Day. Just as farmers check what they gained on Baisakhi, the teachers should do the same on this day. They should ponder over what the students required and where they lacked in providing them the same," Adding to it she said that moral values cannot hold long in a society characterized by self-interest generated by the multiplication of desires. It is for a teacher to prove by a practical example to his students so that spiritual awakening goes hand in hand with intellectual advancement. Moral education needs to be introduced at all levels. Right from the beginning till the completion of formal education, a student should be imparted the basic moral values imbibing which he can face the future life with an honest approach According to Pooja Malhotra the relationship between teacher and student should be opened. Their relation is just like a mother o father who teaches them the moral values and a teacher plays a multiple role in the society. Adding to it she said that apart from parents, a teacher, whom a student regards his ‘torch-bearer’ can teach him the way of life. The ideal of ‘simple living and high thinking ‘ sadly missing from our lives today, needs to be inculcated at all costs if we wish to save our present and coming generations from spiritual erosion. The students must be educated about their rich past and the strong traditional values that bound the humans close to each other. “A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron.” |
