Fast winds blew over Jammu City and its adjoining areas this afternoon uprooting many trees and taking away electric wires at several places. A sense of commotion prevailed in the Winter Capital City in the afternoon when thick dark cloud hovered over. Immediately after this followed the fast windstorm and then heavy rains. The intensity of the windstorm was so high that that it took away several dozens of hoardings, trees and electric wires. After the windstorm and heavy rainfall the city plunged into darkness and the electricity could not be restored in many areas till late this evening. Reports said in the hilly districts of the region, the rainfall was more as compared to the Jammu district due to which weather became pleasant. Reports from valley, Rajouri and Doda Districts said that good rainfalls were experienced in the hilly areas which dropped day temperature considerably. Large numbers of trees and electric poles were uprooted which disrupted movement of traffic at several places across the city. The traffic moved at snail pace due to water logging at several places. Several roads were full of slush and tree branches. Power supply too was affected in majority of residential areas and market places. The black out continued for several hours in Jammu as PDP employees struggle hard to complete the repair work and rectifythe snag. The Cellular network services provided by B.S.N.L were not working properly as most of the time it was out of coverage area. The day started on a bright note but as day progressed dark clouds staged a come back and were hovering over city skyline. The heavy downpour exposed the inadequacies of the Jammu municipal corporation as most of the drain in city lanes and market palaces were chocked and several low lying area were submerged in waters affecting smooth movements of traffic. Students waiting to go home after celebrating teacher's day were held back in schools for some time and buses were allowed to move out of the school premises after the weather cleared and showed signs of improvement. |
