| Police bust sex racket in Punjab; 14 arrested | | |

Police on Friday busted a prostitution racket run from a house in a residential colony along the Kapurthala-Jalandhar road and arrested 14 persons, including nine women, in this connection.
The alleged kingpin of the racket, Balwinder Kaur, who was arrested with the others, accused police officials of having taken bribe to let her run the brothel and claimed that her customers included known businessmen, politicians and senior officials.
Addressing a press conference, SP (Detective) Bachan Singh Randhawa said the woman had been running the brothel for the past four years and had been booked twice earlier by police for immoral trafficking.
The latest arrests were made after a decoy customer was sent to her. The arrested include Balwinder's son and eight women hailing from Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Begowal, Bholath and Pathankot.
Randhawa said he would look into the allegations made by the woman about the involvement of police officers.
Escorted by police officials, Balwinder spoke to the media after her arrest and said a former city police inspector took Rs 9,000 for permitting the racket to run from her house.
She said she wanted to give up the trade after she was arrested the second time, but was urged by some police officials to continue.
The women brought to the brothels were mostly illiterates from the village and many had been deserted by their husbands, she said.
