Kashmir Valley was once again on the boil today as a youth was killed in Police fire in downtown area of Srinagar while curfew was re-imposed in Anantnag township of South Kashmir. One person was killed and another injured as protesters clashed with police during a shutdown called by separatists. Javaid Iqbal, a resident of Nowhatta area of the city, was one of the two persons injured as he was hit by a rubber bullet in the chest during police action, official sources said. He was declared 'brought dead' at the SMHS hospital. Another youth was also injured as police tried to quell protesters there. The Police, however, said that the situation was normal across the Valley except once incident in which a youth was killed by a rubber bullet. Massive protests erupted at several places across the city including Nowhatta and Maisuma as soon as the news of the death of Iqbal was confirmed. The angry mobs clashed with police and paramilitary forces who used batons and fired tear smoke shells to chase away the protesters. Earlier, sporadic protests were witnessed at several places in the city and normal life was paralysed by the strike call given by the Separatists' Coordination Committee demanding right to self-determination. The Police spokesman said here this evening that one person died and another received leg injury due to rubber bullet firing at Nowhatta Srinagar. Giving details he said that a group of people hurled a petrol bomb towards police station Nowhatta which exploded outside the building. Later, the group of people pelted stones on police and CRPF and police used teargas shells and rubber bullets in which two persons received injuries who were rushed to SMHS hospital, Srinagar. The spokesman said one of the injured namely Javaid Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Majeed Bhat and a resident of Nowhatta succumbed to injuries in the hospital while another person namely Jehangir Ahmad son of Javaid Ahmad and a resident of Khanyar who received leg injury is under treatment in the hospital. Spokesman said the body of the deceased Javaid Ahmad was taken by the mob and kept it in Nowhatta Chowk. The spokesman said that another small group of people resorted to stone pelting on police and CRPF at Daresh Kadal in down town Srinagar who were dispersed. He said group of people held protest demonstration outside police station Sopore in Baramulla district. They were demanding release of some persons arrested in connection with recent demonstrations. |
