| Bhalla favours delimitation demand | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 7
While the majority of the mainstream political parties in Jammu demand immediate setting up of delimitation commission for recommending increase in the number of Assembly constituencies in the region, Kashmiri separatists do not evince any interest in it. A senior Hurriyat Conference leader, Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, today said "we are neither concerned with the setting up of the commission nor about the increase or decrease in Assembly segments." He added "we are not concerned about the Assembly election too. We are concerned about the survival of people of Kashmir who have demanding settlement of the Kashmir issue to the flutter of hearts in India, in Pakistan and in Jammu and Kashmir." Bhat said "we have realized that successive elections held in the state had not resolved the Kashmir issue and hence we have decided to launch a struggle for forcing Delhi and Islamabad to resolve the problem which alone could guarantee peace in the region." Contrary to it the BJP,the Panthers Party and now the Congress have been demanding delimitation of Assembly constituencies so that one main injustice to the Jammu region was undone by increasing the number of Assembly seats from 37 to 46 thereby bringing the region at par with the Kashmir valley which already has 46 seats. In order to make up for loss the Congress suffered by the revocation of the land diversion order senior congress leaders, led by Raman Bhalla,a former Minister, organized a rally to celebrate the successful culmination of the nuclear deal. While describing the deal as a victory for the congress and the country Raman Bhalla said that Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister, Pranabh Mukherjee, deserved praise for hammering out the nuclear deal with the United States. Bhalla wanted the Congress workers and leaders to mount pressure on the Governor, N. N. Vohra, so that he uses his constitutional powers for ordering delimitation of the Assembly seats in the Jammu region. He said that the Jammu unit of the congress had extended its support to the Sangarsh Samiti when it launched the agitation for the restoration of land to the Shrine Board. Congress will not hesitate lending its support to those who initiate a campaign for delimitation commission to redraw the Assembly segments in the Jammu region, he added. |
