| Global food conference in Leh | | | Early Times Reporter Leh | Sep 7
A 3-day International Conference on “Novel Approaches for Food & Health Security in High Altitudes” organized by the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research, (DIHAR) Leh and jointly sponsored by DRDO, LAHDC, Leh and National Medicinal Plant Board began here today. M. Natarajan, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister was the chief guest on the inaugural function while as the Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Chering Dorje was the Guest of Honour. Natarajan in his speech said that this event would give a platform to scientists, academicians, environmentalists and policy-makers to share their ideas and experiences and contribute towards the theme. Besides, exchange of knowledge and practices and use of natural resources and solar energies with engineering solution to agriculture and food processing would tremendously help to upgrade the food quality and health security in high altitudes areas like Ladakh. Natarajan further said that such applications would also help in growth of people’s economy in the hilly terrain area. The CECLAHDC, Leh Chering Dorje welcoming the delegates from different countries and India, expressed immense pleasure over holding such a relevant conference in Leh to discuss novel approaches for food and health security in high altitude. He said that the outcome and recommendations of this Conference would become an ideal directory to enhance performance and sustainable development in every sphere of life in this hilly region. Appreciating the all time contributions of Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) of DRDO in propagating and promoting Agro-products in Ladakh with their extremely useful research and assistance, Dorje termed DIHAR as an asset for Ladakh. He said that DIHAR’s role in placing our agricultural and animal production systems on scientific lines is commendable. He said that Seabuckthorn of Ladakh is a nationwide success story today because of DIHAR which has became a boon for promoting economic status of the people of Ladakh. In his address, Chering Dorje gave a brief account of geographical, topographical and historical background of Ladakh to the delegations of foreign and home and expressed hope that their presentations would definitely prove an advantage to the theme of this Conference. Dr. B Bhattacherji, Member, National Disaster Management and Lt. Gen. VK Ahluwalia, GOC, 14 Corps also spoke on the occasion. . |
