Gujjars raise banner, ask community to unite

A delegation of prominent Gujjar leaders of the State today called on Divisional Commissioner, Jammu and submitted a "Charter of Demands", addressed to Governor N N Vohra stressing to launch an immediate rehabilitation program and grant of relief package for tribal families of Gujjars who were uprooted during two month long "Jammu agitation". The leaders under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Gujjars United Front and Gujjar Bakerwal Conference, J&K, said that approximately100 nomadic families are facing severe hardships as they are without shelter in many parts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua Districts and demanded that the Divisional administration should address the problems of "marginalized" on priority basis.
Mohammad Anwar Chowdhary State President of Gujjar Front and Bashir Khatana Secretary General of Gujjar Bakerwal Conference, after their meeting with the Divisional Commissioner Jammu, appealed the community to get united to fight for their rights as the State Government has miserably failed to address our genuine problems. The administration in Jammu is treating us like second class citizens, which is unfortunate and intolerable, said both leaders adding that we will fight and win the war of our rights.
The leader alleged that hundreds of livestock include buffaloes ,cows, sheep and goats, horses and camels belongs to Gujjars in Jammu , Kathua and Samba are missing or perished during the agitation but the no compensation has been granted to poor families whose livelihood were lost during the agitation.
A 8 page Charter of demands sought intervention of Governor of the State in implementation of law and order in minority areas of Jammu and providing of shelter and land to the nomad Gujjars who were uprooted during Jammu agitation or traditionally landless and houseless in the state or living the life below poverty line.
Other who accompanied the delegation included Ch. Hashim Ali, Shah Mohd Chowdary Advocates and Jameel ahmad Chowdhary.
