| Delaying polls with help separatists: BJP | | | New Delhi | Sep 8
BJP today said not holding polls in Jammu and Kashmir on time would deprive the mainstream political parties in the state of an opportunity to occupy the political space in the region and give way to separatist forces to fill the vacuum. "Our assessment that elections in Jammu and Kashmir should be held on time is primarily based on the fact that early polls will give an opportunity to mainstream political parties to occupy political space in the valley. This will correspondingly shrink the space for separatists," party General Secretary Arun Jaitley told reporters. He said normalcy has returned both in Jammu and the valley and hence polls should be held on time. The party feels elections should be held before the on-set of winters, else the harsh weather in the hilly northern state would cause undue hardships to the locals and the officials. "Holding elections for Jammu and Kashmir alone, instead of with other states, would also help in proper deployment of security personnel," he said. The tenure of Jammu and Kashmir assembly, which was dissolved on July 10 and Governor's rule imposed following violence in Jammu and the valley over the Amarnath land row, was to expire on November 20. Almost all political parties, barring the PDP, are in favour of early polls. When asked whether the BJP agreed with the PDP contention that conditions were not conducive for polls in the state, Jaitley said, "I think the situation is not conducive for PDP." BJP's central leadership held a meeting with its state unit on Sunday to discuss its candidates' list. The party is likely to focus on alleged discrimination against Jammu in the forthcoming polls. "During the Amarnath agitation, the issue was not only land allotment but also discrimination against Jammu in terms of development, providing government jobs and a general denial of its share," Jaitley said. |
